The Tallest Man on Earth Spokane Tickets, Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox Sep 22, 2023

Kristian Matsson has never remained in one place for very long. Having spent much of the last decade touring around the world as The Tallest Man on Earth, Matsson has captivated audiences using, as The New York Times describes, “every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and jittering away…Mr. Matsson is a guitar-slinger rooted in folk, and his songs are troubadour ballads at heart.” Then came 2020, when Matsson left New York City and returned to his farm in Sweden. There, during that quiet, dreary time of isolation, he drowned out his thoughts by manically growing vegetables in his garden. When he tried writing again, during those many months of collective forced solitude, “I just found myself commenting on the darkness,” Matsson says. “I lost my imagination.” Playing live, music and inspiration returned near the end of 2021, and his produce became less of a priority. “When I’m in motion, I can focus on my instinct, have my daydreams again. When I was finally able to tour again, I started writing like a madman.” He eventually had twenty songs he wanted to record in ten days. Now, Matsson returns as The Tallest Man on Earth with Henry St., his sixth studio album following 2012’s There’s No Leaving Now, full of “vivid imagery, clever turns-of-phrase, and devastating, world-weary observations” (Under The Radar) and 2015’s Dark Bird Is A Home, his “most personal record… surreal and dreamlike” (P...

Each instrument he so elloquetly strums becomes an extension of his being which translates to an intimate performance. On a more personal note: I have quite the soul connection to him and his music. This show in particular was cathartic to state the least. Ten years ago when he played in Santa Barbara, my soon to be lover was serendipitously at the same show and later down the road, we relished in delight that we each enjoyed the Tallest Man on Earth. His car had the “shallow grave “ album stuck on repeat for months and upon finally freeing the disk from the car’s capture, we played it for hours; dancing together playfully to his favorite tune “the gardener”. Four years ago, my love joined the night’s stars. Upon first awareness that Tallest Man in Earth , the elusive Kristian Matsson was coming to play an acoustic set a decade later, I instinctively purchased my ticket. When I arrived to my seat (albeit a tad la...

The Tallest Man On Earth: Larger Than Life : NPR

The Tallest Man On Earth: Larger Than Life A "less is more" philosophy would explain the skeletal structure of "Burden of Tomorrow," but the song's raw emotion makes additional ornamentation unnecessary. Aside from a bit of spectrally faint keyboard in the background, The Tallest Man on Earth singer Kristian Matsson is the show. The raw emotion of Kristian Matsson's "Burden of Tomorrow" makes ornamentation unnecessary. Chris La Putt "Less is more" may be a cliche, but that doesn't mean musicians often heed that advice. Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson, who performs and records as Still, Matsson's vocal delivery is anything but understated. Affectionately worn like a dog-eared book, his voice has a gravelly quality to it. In "Burden of Tomorrow," it helps paint a picture of a mysterious figure whose origin story sounds like that of a superhero. His actions are just and his identity stays sealed, but there's no need for a revelation when Matsson's words stand out so poetically over the music: "But, hell, I'm just a blind man on the plains / I drink my water when it rains / and live by chance among the lightning strikes." In terms of sound, it's nothing huge, but when it comes to passion, The Tallest Man on Earth can be spotted from miles away.
