Fan of James Bond, Ahmedabad man pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 no. plate for SUV!

AHMEDABAD: His name is Ashik and his love for the number 007 has made recent history in the Ahmedabad regional transport office (RTO). A transporter by profession, Ashik Patel (28) has pledged payment of Rs 34 lakh for fancy number 007 for his new SUV which he bought for Rs 39.5 lakh. In times of Covid induced slowdown where minimalism is being projected as the new financial mantra, some may question the prudence behind buying a number which costs as much as vehicle itself, but Ashik says he has his reasons. “I got 007 number for my maiden vehicle and it has brought a windfall for me. For me it is not about money, it is about belief that this number is lucky for me,” says Patel, a resident of New Shahibaug. Ashiq was granted vehicle registration number GJ01WA007 for his Toyota Fortuner on midnight of November 23. The base bidding price for this number was Rs 25,000. A war broke out during online bidding between Ashik and another bidder and in a matter of hours, the final bid had reached Rs 25 lakh. In the end, at 11.53 pm, Ashik made the final bid of Rs 34 lakh which was granted as the deadline for bidding got over at midnight. Assistant RTO NV Parmar said Rs 34 lakh bid for 007 number is the highest amount committed in a recent bid. "The number will be officially allotted after payment is made shortly," said Parmar. It needs mention that in a departure from recent months during the Covid pandemic where 100 or less bidders would take part in auction of fancy numbers, this ...

The 30 best James Bond gadgets: essential pieces of kit from 007’s adventures

"Nobody does it better," sang Carly Simon in the theme to The Spy Who Loved Me, but 007 does get an awful lot of help when it comes to doing it twice as well as everybody else. The best James Bond gadgets are as integral to the spy’s arsenal as his Walther PPK and a vodka martini (shaken not stirred, obviously), and have become an iconic part of the long-running franchise. Thanks to the ingenuity of Q and his team of boffins, 007 rarely ventures on a mission without the right kit. From the iconic souped-up Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger to a ballpoint pen hand grenade in GoldenEye, the best Bond gadgets have helped MI6’s most famous agent out of a tight spot on numerous occasions. He’s also faced a few challenges of his own when his enemies have got their hands on gear to rival his own. As time has gone by, some of the Bond tech that once felt like sci-fi (the fingerprint scanners in Diamonds are Forever, the wristwatch communicator in For Your Eyes Only) have become reality. Other examples – such as the infamous invisible car in Die Another Day – are as memorable for their silliness as their ingenuity. (Image credit: Eon) Daniel Craig’s Bond would stick out like a sore thumb if he carried a briefcase, but back in the ’60s, they were an essential part of any businessman’s attire. Which is why Q reinvents one as a stylish box of tricks containing a rifle, ammunition, a throwing knife, a tear gas canister masquerading as talcum powder, and – bizarrely – 50 gold sovereigns. T...
