Thiruvananthapuram: ‘108’ ambulance service has created history of sorts by marking 50 successful deliveries inside the ambulances run by it in the state. The record was set while Viji, 30, residing at Chempakamangalam, delivered a baby around midnight on Wednesday while being rushed to the hospital in the ambulance. Viji had developed labour pain around midnight and called 108 ambulance for help. En route to the Medical College Hospital, the mother went into labour and the Emergency Management Team (EMT) of the 108 ambulance helped her deliver the baby. Around 1.15 am, a baby boy was born just as the ambulance was parking itself on the roadside. There were no complications. After the baby boy was born, the pilot of the ambulance rushed the ambulance to the nearest CSI Mission Hospital, Kazhakkoottam. EMTs ran into the emergency room to alert doctors and nurses of the birth so that they could take over the care of the mother and child. Although Viji said she was in severe pain during labour, she and the baby were doing well, said Nabeel A, Emergency Medical Technician. “This is a proud moment for us at 108 to have achieved half a century in successful deliveries in Kerala. The 108 ambulance network has handled 2,15,948 COVID-19 patients so far. More than five lakh persons have utilised the ambulance service, including for cardiac arrest, maternal care and accidents, during the pandemic, according to Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar. “Like all times, the ambulance network provided uninterrupted services, round-the-clock, during the entire lockdown. Other services, such as those for persons with chest pain, cardiac arrest, maternal care and accidents, were not affected, and over five lakh such persons utilised the ambulance service during the pandemic,” he said after inspecting the 108 ambulance network’s emergency response centre on Wednesday. “The Chief Minister is strengthening the 108 ambulance network, and has sanctioned 500 more vehicles, of which 108 have been flagged off. The remaining will be put to use in a phased manner,” he said. In Chennai, the response time of ambulances was being maintained at 8.36 minutes and this was on par with international standards, he said. He also noted that for the first time, a woman ambulance pilot had been recruited. Express News Service COIMBATORE: A total of 75,631 people have benefited from the 108 Ambulance service across Coimbatore district in the past year. The service attended over 30,000 critical cases, including 13,820 accidents and 15,788 pregnancy cases in 2022. Also, 49 deliveries took place inside the ambulance in 2022. According to sources, the officials attended the maximum number of cases in January last year, where 7,572 persons received the service. There are a total of 66 ambulances in Coimbatore, including four bike ambulances, which are stationed in 58 locations across the district, including Kavundampalayam, Thudiyalur, Annur, Metuppalayam, Pollachi and Valparai. Programme manager of the 108 Ambulance service in Coimbatore and Nilgiris district Selva Muthukumar said, “A total of 75,631 people benefitted from the 108 ambulance services from the district in 2022. The ambulances took an average of 11:57 minutes to reach the caller’s location and attend to the patients in the district last year.” He said that the number of beneficiaries in 2022 dropped by 5 to 10% in comparison to last year, as the accident cases have dropped last year in comparison to 2021. “While the ambulance’s response was 12:23 minutes in September, which is the highest in 2022, it was 11:23 minutes in February, which is the lowest response time last year,” he said.
