Difference Between Unit Rate and Rate (Video & Practice)

Welcome to this video on rates and, more specifically, unit rates. This math concept is practical and useful, so we hope that you come away with a solid understanding and confidence in interpreting the rates that are all around you. Let’s get started! Rates are spoken about and used every day in many aspects of life. The concept is pretty straightforward, as rates are nothing more than ratios of values that represent different units of measure. The values that are being compared are called the terms of the rate. Let’s consider the treasure trove of rates that may be in your grocery cart the next time you go shopping. In the examples listed here, the rate that you agree to pay is simply the cost related to the quantity of the product. Let’s say we have a 12-ounce box of pasta, which costs $1.49. The rate is then $1.49 per 12 ounces. If we have a pound of deli meat and the cost is $9.99, our rate would then be $9.99 per pound. Lastly, let’s say we have an 8-pack of 20-ounce bottles of soda and the cost is $5.98. Our rate then is $5.98 per pack. Item Cost Rate 12 oz. box of pasta $1.49 $1.49/12 oz. of pasta 1 lb. of deli meat $9.99 $9.99/1 lb. of deli meat 8-pack of 20 oz. soda $5.98 $5.98/eight 20 oz. bottles If we look at this last example a little closer, we’ll see that there is room to break down the rate even further. The example provides the price of an 8-pack, but what if I want to determine the cost of one 20-ounce bottle? The ratio \(\frac\) provides that information...

Unit Rate Calculator

Calculator Use Find the unit rate or unit price with this calculator. A rate is a ratio comparing quantities of different items. A unit rate is a rate with 1 in the denominator. If you have a rate, such as price per some number of items, and the quantity in the denominator is not 1, you can calculate unit rate or price per unit by completing the division operation: numerator divided by denominator. Examples of How to Find Unit Rate or Unit Price Ryan purchased 3 apples for $1.80. What is the unit price, or the cost of one apple? • We want to know the price per apple unit so we set up a ratio with the number of apples in the denominator. The total price goes in the numerator. So the fraction is 1.80/3. • Complete the division: 1.80 ÷ 3 = .60. You can conclude that the per apple price unit rate is $0.60/1. Ryan paid a unit price of $0.60 per apple (60 cents per 1 apple = .60/1). The pottery store can make 176 coffee mugs in an 8 hour day. How many mugs can they make in one hour? • We want to know the number of mugs made per hour unit so we set up a ratio with hours in the denominator. The total number of mugs made per day goes in the numerator. So the fraction is 176/8. • Complete the division: 176 ÷ 8 = 22. You can conclude that the per hour mug-making unit rate is 22/1. The pottery store makes 22 mugs per hour (22 mugs per 1 hour = 22/1). Kylie can run 12 laps in 30 minutes. How many laps does she run per minute? • We want to know the laps per minute unit so we set up a ra...

Rate Definition

Rate Definition When two quantities of different units are compared and expressed as a ratio, we refer to it as 'Rate'. For example, if we say that a car travels at a speed of 100 miles per hour, then it means in one hour it covers 100 miles. Here, miles and hours are different units. This way of comparing two different units expressed as a single ratio is termed as 'Rate'. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Definition of Rate In math, a rate is a ratio that compares two different quantities which have different units. For example, if we say John types 50 words in a minute, then his rate of typing is 50 words per minute. The word "per" gives a clue that we are dealing with a rate. The word "per" can be further replaced by the symbol "/" in problems. Let us consider an example of a car that is traveling at a speed of 150 miles in 3 hours. This can be expressed as 150 miles divided by 3 hours which is equal to 150 miles/3 hours or 50 miles/hour. Here the word 'per' means for every hour. 50 miles/ hour is the average speed at which the car travels. 50 miles/hour is an example of a unit rate. Let's learn about the unit rate in the next section. Unit Rate The unit rate is different from that of a rate, in which a certain number of units of the first quantity is compared to one unit of the second quantity. In other words, we can say that the second quantity in the comparison is always 1. For example, in one minute there are 60 seconds. Therefore, as a unit rate, we can express it as 60 sec...

Ratios and Proportions

A rate is a ratio that compares two different kinds of numbers, such as miles per hour or dollars per pound. A unit rate compares a quantity to its unit of measure. A unit price is a rate comparing the price of an item to its unit of measure. The rate "miles per hour" gives distance traveled per unit of time. Problems using this type of rate can be solved using a proportion, or a formula. On a vacation, Linda's family traveled 495 miles at 55 mph. How long did the trip take?
