He started playing soccer as a boy and in 1995 joined the youth team of Newell’s Old Boys (a Rosario-based top-division soccer club). Messi’s skills garnered the attention of prestigious clubs on both sides of the Atlantic. At age 13 Messi and his family relocated to Barcelona, Spain. He joined Record-Setting Club Career In the 2004–05 season Messi, then 17 years old, became the youngest official player and goal scorer in the Spanish La Liga (the country’s highest soccer division). Though only 5 feet 7 inches (1.7 meters) tall and weighing 148 pounds (67 kilograms), he was strong, well-balanced, and versatile on the field. He became known for his keen passing and precise ball control. In 2005 he was granted Spanish citizenship. The next year Messi and FC Barcelona won the Champions League (the European club championship) title. By 2008 Messi was one of the most dominant players in the world. Lionel Messi Confirms Retirement From World Cup

"I think not," Messi answered, when asked about the possibility of featuring in 2026. "This was my last World Cup. I will see how things go, but in principle no, I will not go to the next World Cup," he added. Messi explained that he would "like to be there to watch" the competition in 2026 but that he is "not going to participate". This could be easily arranged given that Messi will probably still be living in Miami if everything goes to plan in the MLS. Miami Herald reported that Messi will sign a two-and-a-half year contract with David Beckham co-owned franchise Inter, which comes with an option to extend until 2026. As with the World Cup, in which he lost the 2014 final to Germany, Messi suffered several setbacks at the Copa America by falling at the last hurdle three times ahead of making it fourth time lucky at the Maracana against champions Brazil in 2021. Once he retires from the Argentina fold permanently, Messi will do so as the national team's all-time goals and appearances leader after winning his maiden cap in 2005 as an emerging FC Barcelona talent.
