How The Romantics director persuaded Aditya Chopra to be part of series

Smriti Mundhra, the director of The Romantics, revealed how she persuaded camera-shy producer As Aditya Chopra does a 'face reveal' after years in Netflix documentary, Karan Johar says ‘my best friend has a face’) Aditya Chopra is a part of the docu-series The Romantics. Smriti also said after starting the project, she was speaking to him on 'background to get the context on the story'. The director also said that she wanted to make sure she was interacting with the right people to understand 'all of the contours of the story'. In an interview with DNA India, Smriti said, “I tried to convince him that while my crew and I were in Mumbai, we’ll film an interview for his personal archive. Of course, I had an ulterior motive in a way. He agreed to that. When we were editing the series, I started quietly editing him into the series with hopes that when I showed it to him eventually, he’d agree. It was a risk because a lot of work went into editing and if he had said no, I’d have to re-edit the whole series. The hope was that when he saw how vital his contribution was to this story, he would agree to it.” She added, “Anyone who has worked in any capacity with Aditya Chopra would tell you that he has utmost fidelity to the creative integrity of any project. He is not going to compromise any project’s creative integrity. So, when he saw, just from a creative point of view, how important it was for him to be a part of this and how empty the series would feel without his perspective...

"We could not make Uday Chopra a star": Aditya Chopra – ThePrint – ANIFeed

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 17 (ANI): Despite coming from a filmmaking family, actor Uday Chopra failed to connect with the audience. He made his acting debut in his brother Aditya Chopra’s directorial ‘Mohabbatein’ in 2000. The film was a hit and Uday’s acting skills were appreciated. However, his real struggle started post-‘Mohabbatein’. He featured in a couple of films like ‘Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai’, the ‘Dhoom’ franchise and ‘Neal ‘n’ Nikki’ but failed to leave an impression on the audience’s minds. And now in Netflix’s recent docu-series ‘The Romantics’, Aditya talks about nepotism and why Uday Chopra couldn’t go far in his acting career. He said, “My brother is an actor and he’s not a very successful actor. Now, here is the son of one of the biggest filmmakers, he’s the brother of a very big filmmaker. Imagine a company like YRF, that has probably launched the most newcomers, and we could not make him a star. Why could we not do it for our own? Because the bottom line is, only an audience will decide, ‘I like this person, I want to see this person’. No one else can decide that.” Following this, Uday opened up about his career. “When Dhoom happened, I was still trying to be a mainstream actor. I should have taken Ali as an example and done roles like that,” Uday said. The Mohabbatein actor further said that he received many offers, but he refused them all, as he “was trying to get into a space” that he agreed wasn’t meant for him. “When I started acting, I ...

Aditya Chopra

Fiercely private and notoriously press-shy, Aditya Chopra is an award-winning actor, writer, and director whose credits include such popular Indian films as "Dhoom" and "Veer-Zaara." Chopra, the son of successful Bollywood producer and filmmaker Yash Chopra, began working for his father on films like "Lamhe" and "Darr." After spending several years working as an assistant director, in 1995 Chopra wrote and directed "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge," about a couple who must overcome cultural and familial differences in order to be together, a theme in many of Chopra's films. It was an immediate critical and commercial success and won numerous awards. Chopra next worked as a writer on his father's 1997 blockbuster film, "Dil To Pagal Hai," for which he also served as producer. Preferring to direct only films he has written, he released the romantic drama "Mohabbatein" in 2000 to commercial and critical success. The film, which was nominated for numerous acting and writing awards, also helped launch his brother Uday's acting career. Chopra produced many popular films through the early 2000's, and in 2004 he wrote the screenplay for "Veer-Zaara," which became the top-grossing Bollywood film that year. In 2006, Chopra and his father built Yash Raj Studios, which has released many popular Indian and Bollywood films, including "Fanaa,""Partner," and "Dostana." The Aditya Chopra Story: Discovering the 'DDLJ' Director Through 'The Romantics'

In the trailer for Smriti Mundhra’s The Romantics, is a clip of Abhishek Bachchan saying, “Aditya Chopra is a rumour. He doesn’t exist.” It became a staple joke of sorts to refer to the filmmaker’s elusiveness. Perhaps that is why the makers treated Aditya Chopra’s interview almost like a flagship event, and to their credit, it gives great insight into the man behind the camera. And yet, the most surprising reveal of all is that Aditya Chopra used to be a great dancer and his dance-offs with Hrithik Roshan were seemingly legendary. While there is no video proof of this (at least not any that we have access to), it’s still a feat that the filmmaker would leave one of Bollywood’s best dancers behind. Ever since he was 11-12 years old, Aditya surrounded himself with films, frequenting theatres and even maintaining a roster of his analyses and box-office predictions. He reveals that he has always wanted to watch movies with the Indian audience to gauge how they react to films and that practice is possibly what has led to a near clairvoyance. From seeing the merit in Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! when others didn't to predicting the Indian audience’s reception to his father Yash Chopra’s Lamhe, Aditya Chopra seems to have a finger on the pulse of India. To add to his credit, both he and Shah Rukh Khan recount how the former saw the ‘romantic hero’ in the latter even when the actor didn’t (or didn’t want to) see it. Another aspect that the docuseries delves...
