NEW DELHI: Violent protests against the Centre's radical new Agnipath scheme to recruit soldiers only for four years in armed forces continued in different parts of the country on Friday. Amid the escalating protests, the government late on Thursday night announced the upper age limit for candidates will now be increased to 23 from 21 as a one-time waiver. Govt raises age limit to 23 under Agnipath scheme, asserts intake will go up, lists post-service avenues The government also stressed the intake in the armed forces in the coming years will be around triple the current recruitment, with several avenues also being opened for those being demobilised after the four-year tenures. In a document issued on Thursday, the government offered a detailed explanation on what an Agniveer can do after four years. In every batch, 25% of Agniveers will get selected to the permanent cadre in the armed forces. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that under 'Agnipath' scheme, efforts will be made to create a youthful profile of the Armed forces. Army veterans point out flaws in Agnipath recruitment scheme

The Indian military’s new OR (Other Ranks) recruitment strategy, packaged in Hindi as ‘Agniveers’ on a ‘Tour of Duty’ to protect motherland, is being relentlessly promoted by Union Ministers and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) leading lights, but many veterans have either chosen to stay silent or speak out against the ill-thought-out move. The government announced on June 14 that recruitment to the three Armed Forces will be under the national Agnipath scheme, doing away with regional quotas. But, it stopped short of using the same scheme for officer recruitment, ostensibly because of pressure from Army Headquarters. As per the scheme, 46,000 youth in the 17.5 years to 21 years age group will get a four-year tenure inclusive of six-months training. At the end of four years, as much as 75 per cent of the Agniveers will be ‘retired’ without pension or gratuity, but with an exit package, which the BJP leaders describe in their incessant social media push as ‘very attractive’. Veterans react Among those horrified is the government’s poster boy, retired Major General G.D. Pros and cons of Agnipath scheme through numbers

After the government announced the Agnipath scheme on June 14, the nation’s youth began protesting. Many of them had spent the last two years, during which defence recruitment was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, preparing for the written test of the Defence Services. Their plans of having a long-term career in the military have been cut short to four years with this new scheme. Agnipath’s short-term contract means that at the end of four years, 25% of the 46,000 ‘Agniveers’, who will be recruited this year, will stay on for longer-term service positions. The rest, the government says, will be given preference when applying for other government jobs. However, the scheme does not offer Agniveers any gratuity and pensionary benefits, and the Rs. 48 lakh non-contributory life insurance cover is only valid during the service. With protests continuing, and the government doubling down on the scheme, it appears as though the allure and promise of stability that defence jobs once provide is gone.
