Artificial Intelligence News

June 5, 2023 — AI, machine learning, and ChatGPT may be relatively new buzzwords in the public domain, but developing a computer that functions like the human brain and nervous system -- both hardware and software combined -- has been a decades-long challenge. Engineers are exploring how optical "memristors" may ...

The Future Of AI: 5 Things To Expect In The Next 10 Years

There has been no better time to be in the world of artificial intelligence than now. AI has achieved an inflection point and is poised to transform every industry. Much has already been written about specific applications of AI. In this article, I take a step back to consider how artificial intelligence is poised to fundamentally restructure broader swaths of our economy and society over the next decade with five bold predictions that are informed by my expertise and immersion in the field. With AI and machine learning (ML), we can expect to see orders of magnitude of improvement in what can be accomplished. There's a certain set of ideas that humans can computationally explore. There’s a broader set of ideas that humans with computers can address. And there’s a much bigger set of ideas that humans with computers, plus AI, can successfully tackle. AI enables an unprecedented ability to analyze enormous data sets and computationally discover complex relationships and patterns. AI, augmenting human intelligence, is primed to transform the scientific research process, unleashing a new golden age of scientific discovery in the coming years. 2. AI will become a pillar of foreign policy. We are likely to see serious government investment in AI. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III has 3. AI will enable next-gen consumer experiences. Next-generation consumer experiences like the metaverse and cryptocurrencies have garnered much buzz. These experiences and others like th...

What is AI? / Basic Questions

What is AI? / Basic Questions Q. What is artificial intelligence? A. It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable. Q. Yes, but what is intelligence? A. Intelligence is the computational part of the ability to achieve goals in the world. Varying kinds and degrees of intelligence occur in people, many animals and some machines. Q. Isn't there a solid definition of intelligence that doesn't depend on relating it to human intelligence? A. Not yet. The problem is that we cannot yet characterize in general what kinds of computational procedures we want to call intelligent. We understand some of the mechanisms of intelligence and not others. Q. Is intelligence a single thing so that one can ask a yes or no question ``Is this machine intelligent or not?''? A. No. Intelligence involves mechanisms, and AI research has discovered how to make computers carry out some of them and not others. If doing a task requires only mechanisms that are well understood today, computer programs can give very impressive performances on these tasks. Such programs should be considered ``somewhat intelligent''. Q. Isn't AI about simulating human intelligence? A. Sometimes but not always or even usually. On the one hand, we can learn something about how to make machines solve...

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence Terms AI has become a catchall term for applications that perform complex tasks that once required human input, such as communicating with customers online or playing chess. The term is often used interchangeably with its subfields, which include machine learning (ML) and deep learning. There are differences, however. For example, machine learning is focused on building systems that learn or improve their performance based on the data they consume. It’s important to note that although all machine learning is AI, not all AI is machine learning. To get the full value from AI, many companies are making significant investments in data science teams. Data science combines statistics, computer science, and business knowledge to extract value from various data sources. AI and Developers Developers use artificial intelligence to more efficiently perform tasks that are otherwise done manually, connect with customers, identify patterns, and solve problems. To get started with AI, developers should have a background in mathematics and feel comfortable with algorithms. When getting started with using artificial intelligence to build an application, it helps to start small. By building a relatively simple project, such as tic-tac-toe, for example, you’ll learn the basics of artificial intelligence. Learning by doing is a great way to level-up any skill, and artificial intelligence is no different. Once you’ve successfully completed one or more small-scale projec...

Beyond ChatGPT: 14 Mind

Beyond ChatGPT: 14 Mind-blowing AI Tools Everyone Should Be Trying Out Now Adobe Stock And far from simply being the latest "viral sensation," AI has truly become a technology that any business or individual can leverage to revolutionize the way they work or go about any number of day-to-day activities. Most people will have first come across the term in science fiction, where, for over 100 years, we’ve been entertained by stories involving intelligent robots – sometimes friendly, sometimes not so. In reality, when we use the term AI today, we are usually referring to a technology known as "machine learning." Rather than simulating every aspect of natural intelligence like robots in movies, this simply refers to software algorithms that are able to learn – becoming better and better at carrying out one specific task as they are exposed to more data. Machine learning powers a large number of revolutionary tools that have changed the way we live -from searching for information online with Google, to shopping with Amazon, watching movies on Netflix, or hailing a ride with Uber. Now the latest breed of AI applications offers us the chance to use it for just about any task we can think of. So, let’s take a look at some of them: What Are The “Killer Apps” Everyone Should Know about? ChatGPT Let’s start with a quick recap of the viral sensation that is ChatGPT. It is a conversational interface for OpenAI’s GPT-3 large language model, which has recently been made available to the ...
