New Delhi: India’s second naval aircraft museum, situated at Kolkata’s New Town area, is now open to the public. It has been built by the West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department in collaboration with the Indian Navy. The main objective of the museum is to promote the maritime history of the Indian Navy for educational purposes. It should be mentioned that initially, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) started assembling the parts of the Tupolev 142 anti-submarine aircraft (which was transported to Kolkata on February 14, 2020 from Tamil Nadu). However, later the project was handed over to West Bengal Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). Inauguration details West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the country’s second naval aircraft museum on June 8, 2022. Sudeshna Banerjee The long-range anti-submarine and reconnaissance aircraft, nicknamed the Albatross for its wingspan, that was parked next to the New Town police station since the start of 2020 was opened to public viewing on Wednesday with chief minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurating the Aircraft Museum. The Indian Navy’s decommissioned TU-142, built in the Soviet Union, had been handed over to the KMDA in end-2019. It was dismantled for transportation and was put together on site over the last couple of years. The aircraft was the heaviest, fastest and highest flying turbo propeller ever made in the world and was a mainstay of the Navy for almost three decades. A total of eight Tupolev-142Ms were part of major naval exercises and operations, including Op. Cactus (1988) at Maldives, Op. Vijay at Kargil (1999), and Op. Parakram (2002). Spread over 2.2 acres in DG Block, the museum is a second of its kind in India after the one in Visakhapatnam. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the museum would encourage youngsters to join the armed forces. She also requested Commodore Rituraj Sahu, commanding officer, for a decommissioned submarine to display on the beaches of Digha.

Pieces of a decommissioned Tupolev Tu-142 M maritime reconnaissance aircraft have been assembled to set up the museum. The aircraft museum project was initiated in collaboration of the Indian Navy and the state government to preserve and promote the maritime history of the Indian Navy for educational purposes. The Tupolev Tu-142 M maritime reconnaissance aircraft was designed by the Tupolev Design Bureau of erstwhile USSR. The aircraft with four engines and eight propellers, was developed to provide improved naval combat capabilities. The aircraft had been in service with the Indian Navy for 30 year since 1988 to 2017 after which it was decommissioned. The aircraft, nicknamed the Bear was the heaviest and longest turbo propeller ever made in the world which was used for long range maritime reconnaissance and anti submarine warfare operations of the Indian Navy for close to three decades.
