Ajanta Caves: The Centuries Old Heritage Architecture Ajanta Caves: The Centuries Old Rock-Cut Monument Location: Aurangabad, Maharashtra The finest spectacles of the Indian classical art are hidden in an isolated canyon located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. A world-renowned heritage site, the Ajanta Caves are one of the oldest cave monuments in India, dating back to the 2nd Century BC. These caves were artistically excavated by the craftsmen for the Buddhist monks who prayed, lived and taught at this site. The exclusive paintings at the Ajanta caves provide a panorama of the lives of Buddha and the Jatakas, and also provide a good account of the life in ancient times. Excavated in the shape of a horse-shoe, this site has about 30 caves which stand at a height of 76 meters above the meander of a narrow stream of the Waghora river. These caves were unknown to the world, hidden beneath the dense cover of a forest, until a British officer rediscovered them accidentally in the year 1819. The Ajanta caves were embellished with exquisite paintings of infinite beauty and charm. These paintings were executed as dry frescoes on plaster surface, with intricate detailing. The caves are believed to have been carved out at two different periods, with a gap of several centuries. Cave 9 To 11, Ajanta Caves

At a distance of 550 m from Ajanta Foot Cave Bus Stop, Cave 9 to Cave 11 are situated beside Cave 8 at Ajanta in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. Cave 9 is an apsidal chaityagriha datable to 2nd century BC and belongs to the Hinayana phase of Buddhism. The chaityagriha consists of an entrance door, two side windows, central hall, nave flanked by side aisles (pradakshina) on either side separated by a row of 23 pillars and a stupa, the object of worship. The chaityagriha exhibits reproduction of wooden architectural styles, in the form of inward tapering octagonal pillars, evidence of fixing wooden beams & rafters, etc. The chaitya was in use during later period also as indicated by the sculptures of Buddha on the facade and side walls facing the court. The cave consists of two layers of paintings, the earlier dating back to the second half of 1st century BC and the later to 5th - 6th centuries AD. Cave 10 is also a chaityagriha datable to 2nd century BC and belongs to Hinayana school. This cave is the earliest chaityagriha and most probably the earliest excavation at Ajanta. This is the cave which was discovered by Captain Smith in 1819 and it bears his inscription in pencil. By Air: Currently Aurangabad is the nearest Air point for Ajanta. It can be reached from New Delhi and Mumbai (Bombay), international airport. Indian airlines as well as Jet Airways have daily flight to Aurangabad from New Delhi and Mumbai. Jalgaon has also developed its Airport. Soon it will also start. Ajanta Caves is far near from Jalgaon Airport while a bit distant from Aurangabad Airport. By Rail: Jalgaon is the best place to drop in for Ajanta if you like Rail journey. It is centre point of all major railway stations of India and has Bhusaval (Just 28kms from Jalgaon) as Second largest depot of railways in entire Asia. All Super Fast, express, mail and passenger trains stops at Bhusaval and most of them at Jalgaon as well. You can check online status of availability of reservation on Indian railways official website. From Jalgaon, you can pick up Taxi/ state transport department bus to reach ajanta. This world heritage site is located about 105 km from Aurangabad city. Dating from 200 BC, these caves were excavated in two distinct phases and reportedly took more than 800 years to complete. They comprise Chaityas (Shrines) dedicated to Lord Buddha, and Viharas (monasteries) used by Buddhist monks for meditation.
