IPL 2023: Engineer

An engineering graduate, Madhwal was working a white-collar job, not very long ago. Albeit, his heart knew nothing but an unquenched thirst to pursue his dream of becoming a professional cricketer, eventually taking him to a trail camp organised by the then newly formed Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU). Impressed by his bowling, Wasim Jaffer took the courageous decision of roping a tennis-ball player into the state team. The start might not have been as bright as his future currently looks, but he retained his place in the Uttarakhand team, and a few years down the line, became their white-ball skipper. Speaking on his transition from engineering to cricket, Madhwal said in the post-match presentation “I have been practising a lot and waiting for my opportunity. I have done engineering, but cricket is my passion and I have been waiting for this since 2018.” Now amongst Mumbai Indians’ most prized assets, Madhwal’s IPL journey started with Royal Challengers Bangalore, when the franchise called him to be a net bowler in 2019. An opportunity to be a name on the squad sheet, however, never arrived. Elaborating on his experience as a net bowler, the Roorkee-born cricketer further added “It is not that you don’t get chances as a net bowler. They organise practice matches where you need to showcase your potential. Moreover, you get to stay with the main team, the franchise takes care of all of your needs. Just that one needs to be ready to grab any chance that arrives.” C...

Akash Madhwal: "I didn't get chances at RCB, then I joined MI"

Mumbai Indians (MI) stormed into the Qualifier 2 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as they thumped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 81 runs to knock them out and set a monumental clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday. MI had faced LSG thrice before the Eliminator and had lost all three games, but they finally broke the jinx when it mattered the most. For a team that was criticised before the season began for their poor auction strategy, they are now one win away from playing their seventh IPL final. Who would've thought? While the win was comprehensive, an unlikely hero emerged for MI last night - Akash Madhwal. MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. In their 20 overs, MI managed to post 182 runs on the board, which was considered to be a par score at Chepauk but far from a safe total considering the number of successful run chases this season. Not just that, MI's bowling until has looked toothless for the majority of the season. No bowlers barring Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla have crossed the 10-wicket tally this season. Now, Akash Madhwal joins that list. He picked up five wickets and conceded just five runs in 3.3 overs (yes, his figures were 3.3-0-5-5) as LSG lost their last eight wickets for just 32 runs. While Madhwal, who went on to graduate with an engineering degree, casually played tennis-ball cricket with his friends, he would see Rishabh play with the hard ball. When he saw Rishabh train under coach Avtar Singh around 2013-14, Madhwal too was inspired to give professional cricket a shot. Rishabh would soon leave Uttarakhand and move to Delhi. Madhwal would realise only much later that his neighbour was destined for greatness. The boy he had known as Rishabh all along would announce himself to the world as In 2021, Madhwal was one of the reserve bowlers for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the UAE leg of the season. He had been told an opportunity could open up in the unfortunate event of an injury or a Covid case. IPL 2023 Eliminator: Akash Madhwal scripts T20 history with 5 for 5 against LSG for MI. Key numbers

By India Today Sports Desk: 29-year-old Akash Madhwal was the latest uncapped player to grab the limelight in the Indian Premier League as the Mumbai Indians pacer came up with one of the iconic bowling spells in the high-pressure IPL 2023 Eliminator match against Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday, May 24 in Chennai. Akash Madhwal ran through Lucknow Super Giants' batting order as Mumbai Indians successfully defended 182 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, picking up his maiden T20 5-wicket haul. Akash Madhwal, a Civil Engineer who played only tennis ball cricket until a couple of years ago, came up with a sensational spell of fast bowling, getting the key Lucknow batters, including Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, and Prerak Mankad. It was Madhwal, who struck with the new ball by removing Mankad and then got Badoni and Pooran in the same over to derail Lucknow's chase. Madhwal completed his 5-wicket haul with a fine yorker to Mohsin Khan that sealed Mumbai Indians' passage to the Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans on Friday. Akash Madhawal, who was signed up by Mumbai Indians as Suryakumar Yadav's replacement player in IPL 2022, was given an opportunity midway through the season after MI's pace star Jofra Archer picked up an injury. Madhwal, who was a pro with the tennis ball before he took to professional cricket, started as a death-over specialist because of his ability to nail yorkers but captain Rohit Sharma backed him to deliver with the new ball also. After picking up only...
