LIC Listing Highlights: Shares Lists at Discount; Weak LIC Listing Due to Unpredictable Market Conditions, Says DIPAM Secy

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) shares made a tepid debut on the stock exchanges on Tuesday, May 17, listing at a discount to the IPO price. LIC shares started trading at Rs 865 apiece, down 8.65 per cent from its IPO price of Rs 949 on BSE. The share opened at Rs 872 on NSE, an 8.8 per cent discount over the premium. The sell-off in the global and domestic market, the hike in interest rates by the central banks and the accelerating inflating statistics, and an ongoing global war have dampened the euphoria around the listing of mega IPO. Shares of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) listed at Rs 867.20 on the BSE, a 8.6 per cent discount when compared with its issue price of Rs 949 per share offered to qualified institutions and non-institutional buyers. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the stock opened at Rs 872, i.e. 8 per cent lower against its issue price. By close, the stock stood at Rs 873 on the BSE. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said: “The subdued listing of LIC is in-line with expectations in context to the drop in market dynamics from the opening of the IPO to the listing date. The listing price has fallen in tandem with the fall of insurance sector valuations, maintaining the discount of about 70% to the industry’s average. Positively, the stock was brought at the dip. We believe that LIC is a decent investment opportunity in the short to medium-term considering its strong market presence, improvement in future p...

As share price dips 30 per cent, experts advice patience to LIC investors

Express News Service NEW DELHI: The sharp correction in the share prices of LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India) post its discounted listing on May 17 has dealt a major blow to its investors as the market capitalisation of the state-run insurer has come down to Rs 4.19 lakh crore from Rs 6 lakh crore (based on the upper end of its IPO price (Rs 949)), wiping a total of Rs 1.81 lakh crore. Amid this gloom and doom, what should those investors, who are stuck with LIC shares at IPO price of Rs 949, do? According to equity market analysts, while this sharp decline is a big disappointment, investors should remain patient as the stock may stage a comeback. VK Vijayakumar, chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services said that LIC stock’s performance post IPO has been a big disappointment. He, however, says that it is too early to conclude that the share price won’t reach the IPO price in the next one year. If the Q1FY23 results of LIC are good, the stock may stage a comeback but it is likely to underperform if there is a rally in the market.” In the fourth quarter of 2021-22, LIC reported a profit of Rs 2,409 crore (17% lower YoY) on May 30, which by no means is a small number. However, this could not lift the investor sentiments amid weak global cues and the stock’s downfall escalated afterward. Even MD Rajkumar’s commentary that they would be working to increase the share of non-participatory products in their portfolio to improve profitability and that they a...

LIC plans bonus shares, higher dividend to shore up confidence in stock: Report

The company plans to transfer 1.8 trillion Indian rupees ($21.83 billion), a sixth of the 11.57 trillion rupees lying in its non-participating fund, to its shareholders' fund, according to an official aware of the matter. Life insurance companies primarily sell two types of products: the first are 'participating policies' where profits are shared with customers and second are 'non-participating,' or 'non-par,' policies that have fixed returns. LIC parks the premium it collects from the latter in a non-participating fund. Transferring some of that into the shareholders' fund is one way to shore up investor confidence as it would be an indicator of higher dividend payouts in the future, both the officials said. The surplus in the non-participating fund is earmarked for shareholders and can be transferred to shareholders fund with approval from LIC's board, which is yet to be sought, they said. The transfer, if concluded, would boost LIC's net worth by about 18 times from its current value of about 105 billion rupees and top the net worth chart among insurers, including SBI Life and HDFC Life, both the officials said. LIC and finance ministry did not immediately respond to emails from Reuters seeking comment. A bigger shareholder fund would draw the attention of new and existing investor as the amount would be used by LIC to transfer dividend or issue bonus shares in future, said Harvinder Singh, a partner at law firm DSK Legal. LIC shares were priced at 949 a piece during li...
