Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 26 (ANI): ‘Family Man’ actor Manoj Bajpayee celebrated the completion of six years of his critically acclaimed film, ‘Aligarh’, on Saturday. The actor took to Instagram to share a poster of the film and posted stories of it completing 6 years. The film also had Rajkummar Rao in the lead role with him. Earlier, Apurva Asrani, who wrote the story and screenplay of the film, posted a long message on Instagram to celebrate 6 years of the film. His post read, “Today marks 6 years since #Aligarh released and I’ve put together a bunch of pictures that marks it’s beautiful journey. This film is special, not just because it was my full fledged writing debut, but also because it came at a time when being gay was a criminal offense and the film became a statement of sorts. It was also during the promotions of the film, that i came out of the closet on national television (with @barkha.dutt-pic attached).” The post continued, “Hugest gratitude to @hansalmehta for making this film and for giving me the opportunity to write it. To @erosnow for backing this little film and making it so big. To @rajkummar_rao for adding much heft to the project by playing Deepu Sebastian with such sincerity. To @ancientfeline for sparking the idea to tell this story and for bringing impeccable research and support to the writing process. And finally, to @bajpayee.manoj for playing Professor Siras with so much love, empathy and honesty. I saw the film again two days a...

'Aligarh' Movie Bravely Tackles Gay Persecution In India

Manoj Bajpayee in 'Aligarh' (Photo courtesy of Eros International) Critics in India applauded the Hansal Mehta-directed Aligarh, a drama based on the true story of the persecution of a gay university professor who was suspended for having consensual sex with a rickshaw puller in the privacy of his home. Released on 400 screens last weekend, the film starring Manoj Bajpayee was widely welcomed by media commentators for casting a spotlight on the plight of the LGBT community in India and as an affirmation of human rights, equality, and the right to privacy. However mainstream cinemagoers seem reluctant to engage with gay-themed films such as Aligarhin a country where section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalises any homosexual acts. “The threat is always there even if it is not implemented frequently. And it's a dangerous one. ,” one Delhi journalist told Forbes. Dramas based on real life incidents have been resonating strongly with cinemagoers in India, as evidenced by Ram Madhvani’s Neerja, which stars Neerja easily retained the No. 1 spot at the box-office after widening from 700 to 900 screens in its second weekend. Produced by Atul Kasbekar for Airlift, which stars Last year Meghna Gulzar’s Talvar, a thinly veiled dramatization of a 2008 Noida double murder case in which a teenage girl and her family servant were found murdered and her parents subsequently were convicted for the murders, rang up 30 crore ($4.3 million). Aligarh Review : A lesson of cinematic brilliance

Aligarh was awaited by critics pan India since its announcement. The fact that it is directed by Hansal Mehta and stars critic favorite About Aligarh Aligarh is a story about a professor of Marathi language in Aligarh University, SR Siras (Bajpai) who is caught indulging in a private act with a male friend, by two men calling themselves journalists. As a result, he is suspended from the university and is protested extensively. The story follows him in his quest for justice and acceptance in his own society. Acting Manoj Bajpayee is the soul of Aligarh. Perhaps no one could have lived Prof. Siras like Manoj did. He held the slight Marathi accent with complete ease. The moments where he is alone in the frame listening to Lata Mangeshkar’s songs are the best parts of the movie. Also, not to forget, him sleeping in the courtroom where his lawyer(Ashish) is busy fighting for his rights. Rajkumar Rao also played his part up to his name and shows his comfort level with director Hansal Mehta. Story, Screenplay Ishani Banerjee’s story and Apurva Asrani’s screenplay are pure brilliance. Detailed moments show the potential of the writing. For instance, there is a scene where Siras returns his home and locks up each door and window and firmly places a chair to block the door further and sits on it. It shows his fear brilliantly. However, a scene with Rajkumar Rao’s character drinking with a colleague seemed unnecessary at a high point of the narrative. Direction When a lot of high-qual...

Movie Aligarh 2016, Story, Trailers

Aligarh's an ode to love and loneliness Story: The film is inspired by the real life ordeal of 64-year-old Professor Siras (played by Manoj Bajpayee), who was suspended by the Aligarh University for being homosexual. He was ostracised by the society at large and subjected to physical and psychological torture for his sexual preference. Rookie journalist Dipu Sebastian (Rajkummar Rao) is the man who sees him for what he really is. Aligarh is their journey. Review: Some films cease to be a story or a mere depiction of an incident or an issue. You live them. They mirror the society’s mindset and in doing so, rake out your own prejudices. Aligarh is one such biographical drama that tugs at your heartstrings. movie While it is melancholic, the film doesn’t resort to melodrama to evoke empathy. Aligarh’s heart lies in the beauty of its silences and the unspoken words and unrushed emotions shared between its lead characters. While decriminalising homosexuality is an underlying message, the film essentially revolves around companionship and loneliness, reminiscent of Aparna Sen’s masterpiece 36 Chowringhee Lane. Hansal Mehta captures the inner turmoil and unrest of Siras in the most understated manner. Most importantly, he gives Manoj Bajpayee the role of a lifetime and the latter infuses soul to his character. Bajpayee’s tearful eyes display an array of emotions — sorrow, vulnerability, angst and fear. Scenes where he is seen reciting poetry in fluent Marathi and being immersed i...
