IT is a glorious history to which Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a proud heir studded with many achievements, especially in history. Contrary to common impression, the goal of a university was very much present to the mind of its founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, when he established the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh in 1875. He had two obstacles to surmount. One was prejudice amongst Muslims against Western education and against the rationalist approach to Islam which this great thinker who influenced Iqbal and Maulana Azad advocated. The other was money. A university needs enormous amounts. Sir Syed’s dream, of which he had often spoken publicly, came true in 1920. Now, nearly a century later, it faces destruction by a malevolent and concerted attack on several fronts. This is the culmination of a process that began in 1965. A violent assault on AMU’s Vice Chancellor provided an opportunity to the rank careerist M.C. Chagla, Education Minister, to advance his political career. In a judgment of shocking errors, the Supreme Court upheld the law that Chagla had got enacted against the views of Congress Muslims and despite the doubts of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced the setting up of the university in the name of the Raja, who had donated land for the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The new university will come up on 92.27 acres of land in Lodha village in Aligarh. The CM had made the announcement two years back in 2019 while he was campaigning for by-elections for assembly segments of Tundla and Iglas in western UP. Raja Mahendra Pratap’s great-grandson Charat Pratap Singh expressed satisfaction over the move. In fact, Charat Pratap had earlier served a notice on AMU over the expiry of the lease of land donated by the Hathras royal for the prestigious university. By LUCKNOW: Sami Saud, a student of computer engineering at Aligarh Muslim University, took a year-and-a-half to work on a mobile ECG device which will reflect the condition of heart on laptops or mobile phones display, making it easy for the patient to see and reach out to the cardiologist swiftly. Those suspected to have heart issues can carry it around with them. It will help address issues like sudden cardiac arrest leading to demise of the person within no time, as such cases have gone considerably up after the pandemic. The finger-sized ECG device has been developed by Saud, a second year student of M.Tech, after going through a complex research process under the guidance of Prof Sarosh Umar and Dr Muneeb Khan of the computer engineering department of AMU. According to Saud, he initially worked on a hardware for four months but failed to get the required results. He started working on another hardware again and finall, he was able to make a break through. “ Sharing the mode of operation, Saud said that as the finger-sized device is placed at a point on the chest near the heart, it starts measuring the heart beats just like the ECG. “The device would then be connected either to the laptop or mobile phone through blue tooth and generate pictures the pulse on the display.
