Amarnath Yatra LIVE Updates: At least 16 people have been killed while 15,000 pilgrims, who were stranded near the Amarnath holy cave in Jammu and Kashmir due to a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst, have been shifted to the lower base camp of Panjtarni, officials said Saturday. Here are the live updates from the Amarnath Yatra cloudburst and the ongoing rescue operations today: At least 16 people have been killed while 15,000 pilgrims, who were stranded near the Amarnath holy cave in Jammu and Kashmir due to a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst, have been shifted to the lower base camp of Panjtarni, officials said. Rescue operations by NDRF, SDRF, Army and other security agencies are going on in Amarnath after the improvement in the weather. A Border Security Force spokesperson in Delhi said, "16 bodies have been shifted to Baltal." The pilgrimage that began on June 30 has been suspended following the tragedy and a decision on its resumption will be taken after rescue operations get over, a senior administration official had said. The office of the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor tweeted that the administration was trying to restore the yatra at the earliest and requested the yatris to stay put in the camps.

The annual pilgrimage of Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 1 this year and is likely to culminate on August 31. The Army Commander was accompanied by commanders of the counter-insurgency Kilo and Victor forces. Lt Gen Ghai was briefed on the multi-tier security set-up, medical arrangements, emergency response mechanism and other infrastructure development for the successful conduct of the yatra, the Army said. The health advisory aims to enhance the safety of pilgrims following the unfortunate incidents of 42 pilgrim deaths during the Amarnath Yatra in 2022 due to natural causes. The government has implemented several measures, including the mandatory requirement of a health certificate, installation of oxygen booths, and the establishment of hospitals at various locations along the yatra route, to ensure the well-being of pilgrims. Additionally, aerated cold drinks have been prohibited, while alternatives such as herbal tea, coffee, low-fat milk, fruit juices, lemon squash, and vegetable soup are permitted along the route. The guidelines also prohibit fried rice but allow the consumption of normal rice and light food options such as roasted chana, poha, uthappam, idli, as well as dal-roti and chocolate. Foods like kheer, oats, dry fruits, honey, and boiled sweets are permitted. However, heavy items including chhola-bhatura, pooris, pizza, burgers, dosas, chowmein, and other fried foods are not allowed during the Amarnath Yatra.

Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 6 (ANI): The clearing and restoration work of Amarnath Yatra tracks from the Pahalgam side of Anantnag district of South Kashmir is going on in full swing, a Border Roads Organization official said on Tuesday. The official said that BRO started the clearing of yatra tracks in mid-March this year and will be completed by June 15. While talking to ANI, Aditya, Officer Incharge BRO at Chandanwari said, “We have started the work on clearing the yatra tracks from March 2023. Presently, 800 labourers and 140 horses are working here to clear the 32 km yatra track from Chandanwari to the holy cave”. The BRO official added that the administration of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has set June 15 deadline to clear the tracks. “We are hopeful to achieve that target,” he said. Earlier the yatra track from Baltal to Holy Cave was maintained by Public Works Department (R&B) and the one from Chandanwari to Holy Cave was maintained by Pahalgam Development Authority. Amarnath Yatra tracks were handed over to BRO in Sep 2022 last year for further maintenance and upgradation. The basic scope of work involved snow clearance, widening of the track, restoration of all footbridges, fixing of handrails, protection works at slide-prone stretches and construction of breast walls and retaining walls for the protection of the track. Recently, the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board issued a health advisory outlining a set of food items that are prohibited during the pilgrimage. The prohibited foods consist of jalebi, halwa, pooris, and chole bhature. Amarnath yatra 2023: Preparations in full force; Route clearance on, security on alert

Preparations are in full swing for the commencement of the 62-day long Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to begin on July 1 and culminate on August 31, 2023. During the yatra, the devotees of Lord Shiva undertake an arduous annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath to pray before the Ice Lingam. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started clearing the tracks leading up to the shrine. Considering the threat from terrorists, a coordinated security response grid of different security agencies will be put in place to ensure an incident-free Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir. The Ministry of Home Affairs is slated to conduct a key meeting to review the security preparedness before Amarnath Yatra starts. Senior Jammu and Kashmir officials and those from the security establishment will apprise the top Home Ministry officials of the arrangements being made for the annual Amarnath Yatra. Jammu and Kashmir will also seek additional 250 companies of paramilitary forces from the Ministry of Home Affairs for the smooth conduct of the Yatra.
