Chance Boudreaux The Action Hero: Jean Claude Van Damme as a homeless Cajun who is so down on his luck he's being hunted by wealthy madmen for fun? Well, he's also an ex-merchant seaman with some nifty martial arts moves, so that's OK. That's why he's a Hard Target . Most Iconic Moment: Dispatching big bad Fouchon with the indignity the villain deserves, by dropping a grenade down his trousers. Coolest Catchphrase: "Hunting season is over!" Nada The Action Hero: Unemployed drifter played by 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper in They Live , who inadvertently stumbles upon an alien conspiracy, and grabs a shotgun and a pair of E.T.-spotting shades to save the day. Most Iconic Moment: His epic five-minute scrap with construction worker Frank to persuade his friend to try on the special sunglasses. Coolest Catchphrase: “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…and I’m all out of bubblegum.” Barney Ross The Action Hero: As the leader of The Expendables , Sylvester Stallone's mercenary is providing the last chance saloon for old-school, guilty pleasure action. ‘An Action Hero’ movie review: This Ayushmann Khurrana, Jaideep Ahalwat starrer kicks up a storm of satire Debutant writer-director Anirudh Iyer delivers a a piquant entertainer that makes sharp observations on the fickleness of fame and futility of bloated egos December 02, 2022 12:51 pm | Updated 01:57 pm IST A smartly-crafted action comedy that thrills and tickles in equal measure, An Action Hero’s punches land on target in more ways than one. On the surface, the premise seems bizarre and difficult to sustain interest for two hours, but the rich characterisation, rapid pace, and intelligent plot devices make it a piquant entertainer that makes sharp observations on the fickleness of fame and futility of bloated egos along the way. Set in the times of post-truth when the media and intelligence agencies could make or break a celebrity, the film makes a stinging comment on their work in a fun way. There are segments where it goes a little too over the top and tests our suspension of disbelief, but eventually the hero finishes with a flourish. Manav (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a raging sensation who is known for his action-hero roles in films. During a shoot in Haryana, he inadvertently kills the bully of a fan who turns out to be the brother of the local centripetal force Bhoora Solanki (Jaideep Ahlawat). Bhoora might be just a municipal councillor, but he is no less than a star. As the incident threatens to spoil his carefully-crafted career, Manav escapes to London, but Bhoo...

An Action Hero Movie Review: Ayushmann Khurrana packs a punch in this average action thriller

An Action Hero Story: Maanav (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Bollywood megastar action hero and popular youth icon, falls from grace when he is caught up in a dramatic real-life incident that forces him to run for his life. An Action Hero Review: Anirudh Iyer's directorial debut delves into celebrity culture and the fickle side of fame. Most famous personalities are vulnerable to public backlash and media trials, and this works as the central theme of this 132-minute action-packed drama. On the face of it, 'An Action Hero' is a simple revenge story, but the screenplay transforms it into a twisted tale of a superstar, who finds himself in an extraordinary situation. It is a juicy plot, and Iyer, who has co-written the film with Neeraj Yadav, maintains a steady grip on the narrative for the most part. The film features Ayushmann Khurrana in a never-before-seen avatar. In contrast to his previous socially-relevant dramas, here, he plays Maanav, a buffed-up Bollywood action hero who wears his stardom on his sleeve. Soon, Maanav loses track of reality, especially when the antagonist, Bhoora Solanki (Jaideep Ahlawat), the Municipal Councillor of Mandothi village (Haryana), blames the star for his brother's mysterious death. As a result, they indulge in a cat-and-mouse game. Will the on-screen action hero be able to hold his own when hardcore action unfolds in his real life? Iyer takes a bit long in setting up the plot, most of the first half is spent on that. However, the second half pi...
