An Action Hero Movie Review: Star cast, songs, Showtimes, Posters

Ayushmann Khurrana breaks out of his sub-genre in Anirudh Iyer's 'An Action Hero.' A film that centers around a film actor who plays action-oriented characters in films, the film is starkly different from the film one usually associates Ayushmann with. But while the actor is out of his comfort zone, he doesn't seem out of place playing the quintessential Bollywood hero in the film. Ayushman plays superstar Manav who is known in the country for his action-hero avatar on the big screen. He goes to a remote village in Harayana to shoot. He is a self-absorbed star, who is not keen on the frills that are attached to stardom and take his action-hero avatar very seriously. And so he refuses to play a gangster on screen because he doesn't want to set the wrong example as a youth icon, he also is not ready to entertain the hanger-ons on set- namely Vicky Solanki who has been waiting for hours at the set to get a photo clicked with him. Vicky follows Manav out of the set when the latter doesn't oblige him with a meeting. An altercation on an empty stretch just outside the village leads to Vicky's death. Manav panics and leaves for the UK hoping to fight the legal battle from there as a UK citizen. But Bhoora, a small time goon and influential politician of his area takes it upon his ego and follows him to Uk to avenge his brother's death. The film's slightly chaotic in its pace, but that's what keeps you hooked till the end. With snarky one-liners and a dark comedic underline theme,...

An Action Hero Movie Review: Ayushmann Khurrana packs a punch in this average action thriller

An Action Hero Story: Maanav (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Bollywood megastar action hero and popular youth icon, falls from grace when he is caught up in a dramatic real-life incident that forces him to run for his life. An Action Hero Review: Anirudh Iyer's directorial debut delves into celebrity culture and the fickle side of fame. Most famous personalities are vulnerable to public backlash and media trials, and this works as the central theme of this 132-minute action-packed drama. On the face of it, 'An Action Hero' is a simple revenge story, but the screenplay transforms it into a twisted tale of a superstar, who finds himself in an extraordinary situation. It is a juicy plot, and Iyer, who has co-written the film with Neeraj Yadav, maintains a steady grip on the narrative for the most part. The film features Ayushmann Khurrana in a never-before-seen avatar. In contrast to his previous socially-relevant dramas, here, he plays Maanav, a buffed-up Bollywood action hero who wears his stardom on his sleeve. Soon, Maanav loses track of reality, especially when the antagonist, Bhoora Solanki (Jaideep Ahlawat), the Municipal Councillor of Mandothi village (Haryana), blames the star for his brother's mysterious death. As a result, they indulge in a cat-and-mouse game. Will the on-screen action hero be able to hold his own when hardcore action unfolds in his real life? Iyer takes a bit long in setting up the plot, most of the first half is spent on that. However, the second half pi...

Review: ‘An Action Hero’ Is a Movie That’s Truly Difficult To Predict

Maanav (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Bollywood hero, is battling a crisis. Wearing a jacket over his bare chest – revealing abs bursting with personalities that demand their own Aadhaar cards – he looks at the mirror and snaps at his secretary. Maanav can’t get angry. He has to shoot an action scene, and the rage just doesn’t come. Haven’t we heard about such starry tantrums before? In fact, go three sentences back, effect a small revision, and see the magic: Bhai can’t get angry. Sounds familiar? Welcome to An Action Hero , a movie so sly that its winks feel like blinks. A few scenes later, Maanav does find his anger. (He’s waited three months for his Mustang, and it’ll reach him in another week.) Maanav flies and punches and poses; he’s aced the shot. But he’s also made another hero – a local hero – wait for hours, Vicky (Sumit Singh), the brother of a local politician in Haryana, Bhoora (Jaideep Ahlawat). Vicky wanted a photo with Maanav. Now Vicky is pissed, and he chases Maanav in his car. They finally meet; a brawl ensues. Maanav pushes Vicky whose head hits a rock and he… dies. The actor flees. Beware what you wish for: Maanav wanted rage; he got road rage. A Bollywood star craves a hit; Maanav got a ‘hit and run’. Does this sound familiar? A star, a car, If these two paragraphs make you believe that An Action Hero , directed by Anirudh Iyer, plays out like a simple satire, then, well, it doesn’t. After the excellent tense opening, I expected the hero’s emasculation, some...

An Action Hero REVIEW: Ayushmann Khurrana breaks his social drama image with his power

Director: Anirudh Iyer Star cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Jaideep Ahlawat Bollywood Bubble ratings: 3.5 stars An Action Hero Movie Review: First, let me talk about Ayushmann Khurrana’s character in An Action Hero before I get on with the review. It’s a refreshing change to see Khurrana in an action role after doing a streak of social dramas. Yes, that’s why I have also mentioned it in the headline because it is quite eye-pleasing to see him picking other genres and challenging himself as an actor. Now, speaking about the movie is about a superstar who finds himself in the hot waters when he accidentally kills a politician’s brother. To seek revenge for his brother’s death, the elder brother name Bhoora (Jaideep Ahlawat) goes on a mission to hunt the man down and this leads to a chase game. [Advertisement] Story: Youth Icon! Superstar! Action Hero! At the age of just 30, Maanav was at the peak of his career when he got caught up in an accident while filming in Haryana. Maanav, who was once a household name, is now living in hiding. Fans used to run behind him to take autographs and selfies now people are running behind to either seize him or kill him. But did Maanav really was the reason for the accident? Will he be saved and come back to his normal life? Star performances: I used to like Ayushmann Khurrana for picking social dramas that he presented with a dose of humour. However, it is indeed a refreshing change to see Ayushmann doing the action. This is probably the first fi...

An Action Hero Movie Review: Slick combat scenes can't save Ayushmann Khurrana's film

An Action Hero movie review: Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat's much-awaited film An Action Hero has finally released. Anirudh Iyer's directorial couldn't grab the audience's attention with its humour and power-packed action scenes. If you are still planning to watch the film, read our review first. The film might tickle your bones with its low-key humour, but it moved at such a slow pace without even foot-tapping music. Walking into An Action Hero made me question myself why have them at all? It could be a good watch if it didn't leave my brain with a crick and a cramp because of innumerable twists and turns. If you're wondering did the excitement of how the story unravelled put you on the edge of your seat? The answer to the question forms the main part of An Action Hero, which is full of witty humour and packed action scenes. The evolving plot of what the future holds for the actor. Will he fight back and live up to the reel-life action hero he portrayed in his films? Or Manav will just give up at the end? With some bitter truths, a little bit of masala and commercial elements, the sub-plots were laced with a different climax at every moment and the team failed to weave them intricately within the storyline, which is a bit of a downer. However, the perfect comic timing and face-off scenes between Manav and Bhoora added a wow factor to the film. It's been years that Ayushmann Khurrana’s unconventional movie choices and relatable characters have been making us fall ...

Arnold Schwarzenegger recalls hurtful reviews of Last Action Hero

Schwarzenegger played fictional action hero character Jack Slater in the film, centered on a young movie fan (Austin O'Brien) who, while reeling from the death of his father, receives a magical ticket from a theater employee that transports him into an action movie, where he bonds with the indestructible Slater. It opened with a meek $15.3 million at the domestic box office and $50 million worldwide. "When Last Action Hero came out I had reached my peak after Terminator 2, having the most successful movie of the year worldwide," Schwarzenegger recounts in the docuseries. So when the reviews for the film rolled out, "I cannot tell you how upset that I was," he says. "It hurts you. It hurts your feelings. It's embarrassing."
