Premium Ankita Bhandari murder: How dreams of freedom are shattered for working women in small-town India Neetha N. writes: Women moving from away from villages for economic and social mobility often end up without agency in urban areas. And with every incident of violence against them, there is a fresh wave of anxiety and fear in the minds of young women and their parents For educated girls from rural areas, urban pockets are centres of hope with promised potential for social and economic independence and upward mobility. Many cannot make it to the metros, and for them, small towns are places to fulfil their dreams and aspirations. The murder of 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at a resort in Uttarakhand, has jolted the dreams not only of Ankita, but of many young girls all over the country.
