This University was named after Late Dr.C.N.Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Applied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities. The University was formed by bringing together and integrating four well known technical institutions in the city of Madras (now Chennai) namely, • College of Engineering (CEG) (Established in 1794) • Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) (Established in 1944) • Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) (Established in 1949) • School of Architecture & Planning (SAP) (Established in 1957)

It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.The University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.Situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future. Named after C.N. Annadurai, a chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu, Anna University was formed in 1978 by the merger of four existing Chennai technical institutions with some elements of the University of Madras. The official name of Chennai was Madras until 1996. Divided into six universities in 2007 and reformed into one in 2011/12 it has had an affiliate role since 2001, making it responsible for engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. In 2018 it had more than 500 affiliates, 13 constituent colleges and four satellite campuses across the state. It aims to be "a point of reference, a catalyst, a facilitator, a trend-setter and a leader in technical education". Anna University was rated fourth among engineering institutions, 10th in the overall university category and 28th for business and management in the National Institutional Ratings Framework for 2018. The pioneering Centre for Biotechnology dates back to 1984 and it is rated by the Universities Grants Committee as a University with Potential for Excellence in Biomedical Engineering and Instrumentation. In 2009 it launched ANUSAT, the first space satellite from an Indian university and a decade later had the achievement of keeping an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle aloft for more than six hours, which became a world record.
