Annie Besant Biography

Annie Besant Biography Annie Besant (1847-1933) – political reformer, women’s rights activist, theosophist and Indian nationalist. “An imperious necessity forces me to speak the truth, as I see it, whether the speech please or displease, whether it bring praise or blame. That one loyalty to Truth I must keep stainless, whatever friendships fail me or human ties be broken.” – Annie Besant, Annie Besant was born 1 October 1847 in Clapham London to parents of Irish roots. After the early death of her father in 1852, the family were brought up in relative poverty and Annie was looked after by a friend of the family Ellen Marryat. This enabled Annie to gain a good education and travel around Europe. In 1867, aged only 19, she married a clergyman Frank Besant, seven years her senior. They went to live in Sibsey, Lincolnshire, where Frank was a vicar. However, the marriage soon experienced difficulties. Annie became increasingly radicalised in her political views – whereas Frank was generally conservative. Annie instinctively supported the rights of workers and poor farmers. Annie also began writing, but her husband didn’t allow her to keep her earnings. More seriously Annie began questioning the religion of her birth and, in 1873, she stopped receiving Communion because she no longer felt she could call herself a Christian. “…but I could no longer attend the Holy Communion, for in that service, full of recognition of Jesus as Deity and of His atoning sacrifice, I could no longer...

Annie Besant: The Pearl of the Indian Renaissance – MASONIC PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

By on May 16, 2018 • ( “ She loved India with a fervor and devotion all her own. Our country’s philosophy, our history or legends, our spiritual heritage, our achievements in the past, our sorrows in the present, our aspirations for the future were part and parcel of Mrs Annie Besant’s own life.” – Sri Prakasa in Indian Political Thought A consideration of Annie Besant’s role in the cultural and spiritual renaissance of India – in a period from the dusk of the 19th century to the dawn of the 20th – must be appropriately examined in the context of the larger renaissance movement which began with the Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772 – 1833), founder of the Brahmo Sabha movement, in the early years of the 19th century. Affectionately deemed the “Herald of a New Age,” Ram Mohan was, no doubt, largely responsible for laying the groundwork for the revitalization of the Indian spirit which was to follow. Upon his death, the Brahmo Sabha became moribund, and out of its eclipse emerged the movement that would become the Brahmo Samaj, considered from an historical perspective as a significant contribution to the making of modern India, and among the most influential religious movements to spring forth from Hindu soil. The purpose of this latter was, in short, the total renaissance of Hindu culture; this to be accomplished by the rejection of scripture as an authoritative source of spiritual truth; the denial of the infallibility of Avatars; a denunciation of polytheism and idol-worship; a b...

The Bharat Scouts and Guides Karur District: Dr.Annie Besant

ANNIE BESANT (1847-1933) Annie Besant (1847–1933), second President of The Theosophical Society from 1907 to 1933, was described as a ‘Diamond Soul’, for she had many brilliant facets to her character. She was an outstanding orator of her time, a champion of human freedom, educationist, philanthropist, and author with more than three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. She also guided thousands of men and women all over the world in their spiritual quest. Early Days Annie Wood was born on 1 October 1847, and educated privately in England, Germany and France. She was a devout Christian, and was married at the age of twenty to an English clergyman, Rev. Frank Besant, Vicar of Sibsey, Lincolnshire, by whom she had a son, Arthur Digby, and a daughter, Mabel. However, the awakening of her character made her challenge several of the Christian dogmas. ‘It was not the challenge of unfaith’, as Jinarâjadâsa was to say later, ‘but rather of a highly spiritual nature that desired intensely not only to believe but also to understand.’Unable to make logic out of Christian traditions, she left the Church in 1872 and became a freethinker, thus ruining her social position through her passion for Truth; consequently she had to leave her husband and young son. In 1879 she matriculated at London University and went on with her studies in science but met obstacles there owing to the sexist prejudices of her time. She joined the National Secular Society in 1874 and worked in the free th...

Annie Besant And Krishnamurti : Two Great Souls In Quest Of Truth – Prof. P. Krishna

Dr. Annie Besant and Sri J. Krishnamurti ( Krihsnaji) have been two great seekers of Truth. They were both inspired and influenced by theosophical ideals which state that Truth is the highest religion. Their life was so dedicated to the quest for Truth that they were prepared to sacrifice anything and everything for it. Though I never met Dr.. Besant, I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about her relationship with Krishnaji. Therefore, in this article, I wish to present a different perspective based both on personal knowledge and my readings. It is clear from Dr. Besant’s autobiography that even before she joined the Theosophical Society and came to India, she never compromised with her perception of what was true, irrespective of the price she had to pay for it. She did not allow anything to stand between her and her perception of the truth- neither religious beliefs nor family and friends. Whenever she saw something was false or unjust, she immediately dropped it and pursued the truth by transforming her life fearlessly. It was this quality in her which must have led Krishnamurrti to say to me in reply to a question why people find it so difficult to get the truth of his teaching, “ Sir, if Amma had been younger, she would have got it.” I think he was telling me in 1985 that it needs the kind of fearless passion for truth which Dr. Besant had, for someone to be able to break through all the past conditionings and perceive the truth of which he was speaking. That s...

Keralite’s Bharat Ratna proposal for Annie Besant referred to MHA

By Express News Service KOCHI: A proposal to confer Annie Besant (1847-1933) with ‘Bharat Ratna’, the highest civilian award of India, was recently referred by the Committee on Petitions of Lok Sabha to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The proposal, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was submitted by Alappuzha-based A Sivasubramanian, a perfumer by profession. He is also the treasurer of the Theosophical Society, Alleppey (established 1903 ) and a trustee of Sanathana Dharma Vidya Sala (established 1905), both founded under the inspiration from Annie Besant. “If the award is conferred on Besant, it will serve as a motivation for the coming generation to know about her contributions to the country,” said Sivasubramanian. One of the major contributions of Besant, was the starting of schools and colleges through Theosophical Society across the country, which provided value-based education in both vernacular and western languages, he said.“The move was a counter to the British who encouraged only missionary schools that taught only English to sustain their rule and propagate their culture in the country. Besant established these institutions at a time when the country had only a six per cent literacy rate,” he added. “She played a leading role in the home rule movement which trained people in lessons of democracy and also founded the newspaper ‘Madras Standard’ in 1914 (which was rechristened as New India) to provide news regarding the freedom struggle,” Sivasubramanian s...
