Arya Samaj was one of the Hindu organisations that worked towards growing civil rights movements in India in the 1800s. Swami Dayanand Saraswathi was the founder of the Arya Samaj. His teachings are essential in today’s world. More than a religious leader, he left a profound impact on the concept of religion and Indian society. Swami preached Universalism, not any particular caste. The Samaj promoted values and practices based on the belief of the Vedas. It was the first Hindu organisation that introduced proselytisation. Proselytisation means converting people’s religious or political beliefs. The Arya Samaj campaigned against casteism, widow remarriage, and women’s empowerment. The mission of the Arya Samaj is to eradicate Poverty or Indigence (Abhav), Injustice (Anayay), and Ignorance (Agyan) from this earth. Further, he established ten principles called the ten Niyama’s or Principles. The four Vedas, Sam Veda, Rig – Veda, Atharva Veda, and Yajur Veda, paved the Samaj path. Arya Samaj believes in One God, known by “Om,” who is Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, source of all Just and Blissful, Intelligence and Merciful. Photo: LOSIRENE CHAND By LOSIRENE CHAND The community of Boubale Arya Samaj, outside Labasa, celebrated Arya Samaj Sthapna Diwas at its mandir yesterday. The annual celebration, on April 10, commemorates the teachings of Swami Rishi Dayananda Saraswati. The community’s president, Rajesh Chandra, said since the 10th fell in the middle of the week they decided to celebrate yesterday. “It is the day when the Arya Samaj was formed in India and so when the indentured labourers came to Fiji they brought his teachings with them.” He said it was after the Mahabharat that everything was lost and came under one banner. “It was Swami Rishi Dayananda Saraswati who formed it and devotees celebrate the hard work and the movement carried out by Swami Dayananda.” The community’s vice president, Subhash Tulsi, said the community held prayers (puja), sang bajhans and the priest talked about Swami Rishi Dayananda Saraswati and his teaching. “His teachings are somehow like Buddhism.” He said Swami Dayananda formed this religious, moral, and educational organisation named Arya Samaj. Arya means a noble person, having good qualities. Samaj means a society. Arya Samaj members practice the teachings of the four Vedas, which are Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Artharvaveda.

(चैत्र शुक्ला 5 शनिवार सम्वत् 1932 विक्रमी) को स्वामी दयानन्द ने 31 दिसम्बर 1874 से 10 जनवरी 1875 तक "स्वामीजी ने यह प्रस्ताव किया कि राजकोट में आर्यसमाज स्थापित किया जाए और आर्यसमाज के नियमों के विषय में इस जीवन-चरित में लिखा है कि- "स्वामीजी ने आर्यसमाज के नियम बनाये, जो मुद्रित कर लिये गये। इनकी 300 प्रतियां तो स्वामीजी ने इसके बाद 10 अप्रैल, सन् 1875 को आर्यसमाज की स्थापना हुई। इससे सम्बन्धित विवरण "स्वामीजी के गुजरात की ओर चले जाने से आर्यसमाज की स्थापना का विचार जो बम्बई वालों के मन में उत्पन्न हुआ था, वह ढीला हो गया था। परन्तु स्वामी जी के पुनः आने से फिर बढ़ने लगा और अन्ततः यहां तक बढ़ा कि कुछ सज्जनों ने दृढ़ संकल्प कर लिया कि चाहे कुछ भी हो, बिना (आर्यसमाज) स्थापित किए हम नहीं रहेंगे। स्वामीजी के लौटकर आते ही ...
