The Indian smartwatch market has witnessed a phenomenal rise in demand owing to the outbreak and prolonged impact of the pandemic. The health and lifestyle-related elements associated with the smartwatch and the emergence of quality home-grown brands is believed to be the biggest driver for the market. We spoke with Arnav Kishore, the co-founder of Fire-Boltt, which as per IDC and Counterpoint market research reports is the fastest growing Indian smartwatch brand at present. Excerpts from the interview: How significant has been the health factor behind the significant spike in demand for smartwatches? The third quarter of 2020vis-à-vis that of 2021 saw the watch market in India rise by more than 450%, as per a report on wearables by the International DataCorporation. The timeframe also suggests that the pandemic did play a major role in spiking the demand for smartwatches, considering the health features it offers. Blood oxygen level for instance has been one of the key elements in early detection of infection, and the smartwatches have proven to be quite accurate in this regard. By Sarthak Dogra: Smart wearables seem to be in demand in India as the wearable market in the country recorded an increase by 93.8 per cent year-over-year (YoY) in the previous quarter. Highlighting the growth, a new report mentions that a total of 23.8 million wearables units were shipped in India from July to September this year. The data comes from the International Data Corporation (IDC) in its new India Monthly Wearable Device Tracker report. The report mentions that the wearables market saw record shipments even in the midst of logistic challenges and an increase in cost of transportation, much thanks to the month-long festival sales. From the three months under consideration, total shipments of wearables crossed 10 million in September, double the shipments observed in the same month last year. Thanks to this, quarter 3, 2021 ranked as the record quarter for wearable devices in India. Interestingly, Indian brands managed to capture the majority of the wearables market among this record shipment. Brands including Noise, boAt and Fire-Boltt accounted for two-thirds of the smartwatch market with their aggressively priced offerings. Noise alone managed to grab 26 per cent market share, maintaining its pole position for the sixth straight quarter.
