Asif Ali on why Malayalam film industry does not have films like 'RRR', 'KGF' I Exclusive

Asif is a believer of cinema and its magic. For him, cinema is entertainment and that is one of the foremost things he looks at while choosing a film. “The first thing I think about after listening to the story is whether this is something I would like to watch in a theatre,” he says while admitting that most of them have proved to be a failure. “My problem is that I am always very excited. I came to the movies after having the desire to be a part of it for a long time. So when I hear basic thoughts of a movie story or the idea of it, I get really excited. In that spirit, I have committed to a lot of movies. Sometimes, I might not be suitable for that character or it might not be as well executed as it was narrated. So for me, it is always like a trial run and I like this process,” he said. While Malayalam cinema has been and is being lauded for its innovative cinema, Asif feels that it is time that the industry focuses on the cinematic side of thingss as well. “The so-called realist cinema is the problem that Malayalam cinema is facing today. In the other industries, they make movies with cinematic experience like ‘ “People are getting to see their real life issues on screen. It worked in the beginning. At the end of the day, when a person walks into the theatre they seek entertainment and that I feel we were missing out on a little. I did both ‘Virus’ and ‘2018’ and the former was more realistic and the latter a little cinematic. There were a lot of goosebump moments and...

Pakistan’s Asif Ali: ‘I can’t express the feeling

T his week Asif Ali was named the ICC’s male cricketer of the month for October, with barely a whisper of dissent. The remarkable thing about this is that he only faced 19 deliveries in the entire month – even if the recipient of the award was certain to come from the Asif’s 27 off 12, very much a marathon by his standards, dragged his team over the line against New Zealand, but his next match was where the real fireworks came. Against Afghanistan he arrived at the crease with his team needing 24 from 13 balls. Shadab Khan nudged the next ball to midwicket and wanted a single but Asif sent him back: he had this. Four of the next six balls went for six and Pakistan won with an over to spare, Asif’s contribution brief but jaw-droppingly brilliant. Player of the month? Yeah, and then some. Read more “I can’t express the feeling,” Asif says. “But what I can tell you is that I have a video of those four sixes and I have watched it 100 times. I will always enjoy seeing that video. In 2016 Asif’s job is to arrive late in the innings and take massive risks for potentially massive reward, and at this he is one of the best and still improving. Across his international T20 career he boasts a strike rate of 148.7 and at this World Cup it is running at 247.8. Yet he has struggled to get into Pakistan’s team. He first broke into the setup in 2018 but drifted out again the following year, as his form suffered during a time of unimaginable emotional turmoil. His infant daughter, Noor Fati...

But one look at his T20 numbers and you realize that this man loves the shortest format of the game. He made his first-class debut for Faisalabad at the age of 19 in the year 2010. And so far has featured in more than 20 games being in and out of the side. Playing as a specialist batsman, his average of touch more than 17 does not do justice to his talent. And to make matters worse, a single fifty in almost 30 list-A games hasn't enhanced his reputation either. But the way he announced his arrival on the T20 stage was theatrics personified. Playing for Faisalabad Wolves he smashed a ton off 59 balls against Multan Tigers which included 9 fours and 7 sixes. Asif before playing first-class had worked as a blacksmith but now happens to be a T20 star in the domestic circuit. His exploits were identified by Islamabad United and he was a part of the title triumph in the first edition of the PSL. Having scored only 34 runs in 3 innings, he would be hoping for a ...
