The Vedas are the oldest Hindu sacred texts, considered by many to be the most authoritative of all the texts. They are also the oldest known texts that contain yogic teachings. The Vedas are written in Sanskrit and originated in ancient India. There are four Vedas, or books, which make up the collection of Vedic literature. The Vedas were written down thousands of years ago, but it is believed that they contain knowledge and wisdom that originated even long before then, passed down orally. Very little is known about the writers of the texts. In fact, Hindus regard the Vedas to be authorless, or not of man. Instead, they believe that they were originally revealed to ancient sages through divine inspiration. Yoga that derives from the Vedas is known as Vedic yoga. The Sanskrit word, v eda, means "knowledge." The Vedas are also referred to by some as sruti literature, meaning “what is heard,” as opposed to other sacred smrti texts, meaning “what is remembered." In this way, they are considered to be the direct word of the Divine. Orthodox schools of Indian philosophy take the Vedas as their spiritual authority. Other schools may not accept them as the authority, but still teach ideas that are expressed in the Vedas, such as the concept of karma. "The Atharvaveda (a tatpurusha compound of atharvan, an ancient Rishi, and veda, meaning knowledge) is a sacred text of Hinduism and one of the four Vedas, often called the fourth Veda. According to tradition, the Atharvaveda was mainly composed by two groups of rishis known as the Atharvanas and the Angirasa, hence its oldest name is Atharvangirasa. In the Late Vedic Gopatha Brahmana, it is attributed to the Bhrigu and Angirasa. Additionally, tradition ascribes parts to other rishis, such as Kausika, Vasistha and Kasyapa. There are two surviving recensions (sakhas), known as Saunakiya (AVS) and Paippalada (AVP). The Atharva Veda is regarded as the fourth Veda and is a late addition to the Vedic scriptures of Hinduism. It contains knowledge storehouse of “atharvāṇas,” i.e., the procedures for everyday life. The Atharva Veda has been written in Vedic Sanskrit and contains a collection of 730 hymns with about 6000 mantras. The Atharva Veda has been called the “Veda of magical formulas.” It incorporates formulas for magic and even daily rituals for initiation into learning, marriage, and funerals. The Atharva Veda also includes royal rituals and the duties of the court priests. It has been estimated that the Atharva Veda was compiled about 1200 BC – 1000 BC. The Atharva Veda is known by several other names such as: • Atharvanaveda: The word Atharvan has been derived from ‘athar,’ which is regarded as an obsolete word for fire.
