By Express News Service BENGALURU: Days after issuing a final notification recognising 243 wards in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, the State government has moved another step closer to hold the much-anticipated BBMP election.After the process of delimitation under the BBMP Act 2020, the government in a notification on Friday, identified District Election Officers (DEO) and Returning Officers (RO) who would be responsible for holding elections. The DEO and zonal returning officers for BBMP are categorised assembly and division-wise. The Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner will be the DEO for wards in Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Yeshwanthpur, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura, Bengaluru South and Anekal assembly segments. Under him, Joint Commissioners (JC) of Yelahanka, Dasarahalli, RR Nagar, Bommanahalli and Deputy Commissioner (Mahadevapura) will work as zonal returning officers. Similarly, the Special Commissioner (Administration) will be the DEO for RR Nagar, Shivajinagar, Shanthinagar, Gandhinagar, Rajajinagar, Chamarajapet and Chickpet assembly constituencies. JCs of RR Nagar, East, West, South zones and Deputy Commissioner (South) will work under the DEO as zonal returning officers. The Karnataka government on Wednesday informed the High Court that it needs more time to conduct the elections to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Additional Advocate General Dhyan Chinnappa on Wednesday informed a single judge bench of the High Court that information has been sought from the Justice Bhaktavatsala Committee regarding the Backward Classes reservation. Express News Service BENGALURU: With the Supreme Court directing the state government to complete the reservation exercise within a week, officials have set the ball in motion to conduct the municipal council elections. A senior government official, not wanting to be named, said the long-delayed exercise of holding Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council elections is likely to be announced by August-end or September first week. The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the state government to complete the reservation exercise for elections in a week’s time. “Once the apex court orders are issued, there is no other option. The city has been running for very long without corporators. Filing an appeal will not take us anywhere. We need corporators and the city has been waiting for it. This was, in fact, the suggestion of most of the citizens when they filed their objections during the delimitation exercise,” a senior BBMP official said. Officials said they will try their best to complete the reservation exercise in a week’s time, keeping former corporators of all parties and citizens in mind. After this, the reservation will be sent to the government for approval, and placed before the public for objections. Once finalised, it will be sent to the Election Commission. EC officials said they were ready for elections, and that as per earlier SC directions, election dates should be announced in the ninth week after delimitation is completed.
