BBMP, which has seen nearly 24 per centyear-on-year increase in its property tax collections for 2022-23, is upbeat about earning more the coming year as it puts in place additional measures to make revenue collection further efficient However, the collection is around Rs 430 crore short of the target (Rs 4,189.8 crore) the agency had set for itself in the previous budget. “Total property tax collected along with cesses has increased significantly. In 2021-22, the collection was Rs 3,033 crore and the same increased to Rs 3,758 crore in 2022-23, registering a yearon-year increase of 23.9 per cent,” BBMP special commissioner (finance) Jayaram Raipura said in his budget speech. Raipura credited the special commissioner (revenue) for the extraordinary efforts towards plugging leakages and identifying revenue sources. Specifically, he said, a study was undertaken to identify properties where owners were paying commercial rates to Bescom and other state agencies but had declared residential property tax payments. The said study identified 12,699 cases and an amount of Rs 134 crore has already been levied, he said, adding that it is expected to levy about Rs 250 crore of additional taxes on this account. Upbeat, Raipura said: “A target of Rs 4,790 crore is expected to be collected in 2023-24 under property taxes, including cesses.
