In response to the inconvenience caused to property owners paying taxes on time and considering the model code of conduct, Congress functionaries in Bengaluru have urged the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike ( BBMP) to extend the 5% tax rebate by an additional month. Former Congress corporators M Shivaraju and Abdul Wajid recently met with the BBMP chief commissioner to discuss the matter. The BBMP typically offers a 5% rebate to property owners who pay their taxes for the upcoming fiscal year in April. However, due to this year's assembly elections, several BBMP revenue wing officials were occupied with poll-related duties in April and May, causing inconvenience to many taxpayers. Consequently, the Congress functionaries have requested an extension of the rebate period until June 30 to accommodate those who were unable to avail the rebate earlier. Drafting a Request to the State Government To implement the rebate extension, the BBMP is currently preparing a formal request to be submitted to the state government for approval. The BBMP has extended the rebate period for property owners paying the full property tax in one installment till end of June Every year the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the civic authority, which collects the property tax from the citizens, offers a five per cent rebate to those who pay the full property tax for the entire year. Each year the last date to claim the rebate is April 30. However, this year, the BBMP has extended the rebate period for the assessment year 2021-22 for the full payment of property tax in one full installment, till June 30, 2021. Why pay property tax? The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has extended the property tax rebate period till the end of May. An order to this effect was issued by Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta. The civic body usually extends a 5% rebate on property tax to citizens who make the complete payment in the first month of the new financial year. In a welcome move for property owners in Bengaluru, the state government has announced the extension of a 5 per cent rebate on property tax for the month of June. A 5 per cent rebate on the property tax, which had expired on April-end, has been extended for the full month of June. In an order issued by the state government on Thursday, the discount will apply to owners who are paying the property tax on or before June 30. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar termed the move a “gift” to the citizens of Bengaluru. Generally, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) offers a 5 per cent rebate on property tax in the first month of the financial year and gets extended by a month. This year, such an extension was not given as the model code of conduct was in place. While the rebate helps the property owners, it also provides cash in the hands of BBMP for clearing pending bills, which are due for works that were done over the last two years.
