AutoSuccess Cover Story: Brian Benstock (Paragon Direct)

The future can be a frightening place, especially for those not able — or willing — to adapt to changing realities and market conditions. While the auto sales industry has enjoyed several years of growth, change is on the horizon. Those dealerships locked into past models and old methods of thinking might not find that future to be a hospitable — or survivable — space. Brian Benstock, vice president and general manager of Paragon Honda and Paragon Acura of New York City, has spent time and effort trying to determine what that future has to offer, and one word sums up his findings: disruption. The ways of the past “The current dealer model is not a dying breed,” Benstock said. “It’s dead. It’s absolutely dead.” The reason for his startling prediction is due in part to changing customer expectations of not only automotive shopping but the very act of shopping itself. Benstock believes that the convenience, growing acceptance, and ultimate expectation of online transactions — along with the transparency those transactions demand — run counter to the classic dealership model. “The most successful businesses are the ones that best meet the needs of the customer,” Benstock said. “For years, the dealers have relied on antiquated business models — the franchised dealer agreements — to protect themselves. The second the customers are given an opportunity to go away from the standard business model of automobile dealers, they will. More and more, we’re seeing that they’re being give...

Several orators of antiquity acquired this epithet "golden-mouthed," notably St. John Chrysostomos (ca. 349-407), a renowned speaker and one of the Three Holy Hierarchs of the Greek Orthodox faith. The odd one-word sentence appears to comment on Mulligan's "even white teeth glistening here and there with gold points," in the previous sentence. It is the first appearance in Ulysses of the book's revolutionary stylistic device of interior monologue, often mislabeled stream of consciousness. Read More Bernard Benstock says of this cryptic one-word sentence, "As a comment on Buck's dental work it is redundant; as a narrative comment it is out of place" ( Critical Essays, 3). Who is thinking this odd thought? There is only one good possibility: the person standing next to Buck Mulligan, watching his moving mouth, listening to his verbal pyrotechnics. Stephen is the kind of person who can muse on church fathers before his first cup of tea, and also the kind of person who would notice that one of Mulligan's middle names is "St John," linking him with St. John Chrysostomos. And, as Benstock also observes, Stephen repeatedly thinks of Mulligan in damning one-word judgmen...

Women of the Left Bank by Shari Benstock

Now available in a durable paperback edition, Shari Benstock's critically acclaimed, best-selling Women of the Left Bank is a fascinating exploration of the lives and works of some two dozen American, English, and French women whose talent shaped the Paris expatriate experience in the century's early years. This ambitious historical, biographical, and critical study has taken its place among the foremost works of literary criticism. Maurice Beebe calls it "a distinguished contribution to modern literary history." Jane Marcus hails it as "the first serious literary history of the period and its women writers, making along the way no small contribution to our understanding of the relationships between women artists and their male counterparts, from Henry James to Hemingway, Joyce, Picasso, and Pound." Come, say their names with me: Bryher, Mina Loy, Gertrude Stein, Janet Flanner, Sylvia Beach, Adrienne Monnier, Djuna Barnes, Natalie Barney, Renée Vivien, H.D., Kay Boyle, Caresse Crosby, Maria Jolas, Solita Solano, Nancy Cunard, Jean Rhys… All of these women are vital, essential, figures in the history of twentieth century literature and gender politics. Pretty much all of them remain either marginalised or ghettoised within the standard histories of the period, and most of their work is either out of print or, at best, under-read and incorrectly analysed. This means that you are duty-bound to track down their works and read them. The operation of the heteronormative, patriar...
