What makes a movie franchise great? Is it the box office numbers, its success at continuity, its immortal source material, the characters, its general capacity as a ‘film’ or the love these films receive even generations hence? This discussion could go on a while, and whatever may be the reason for it, it’s now a known fact that movie franchises keep the wheel spinning in Hollywood. Most of the movie franchises were formed owing to the very first outing being immensely successful at its time; and while it is heartening to see somewhat concentrated efforts to keep these beloved movie franchises going, it also bothers me that a lot of them have morphed into shameless cash grabs, with the franchise churning out movies just to earn money, milking on the nostalgia and popularity of its previous films. What’s fascinating to note is that a lot of the movie franchises on this list are operational till date, despite their first film being decades old, either going the ‘reboot’ way or leaping forward years, telling a similar tale with new, younger protagonists. What’s also notable, is that a lot of popular movie franchises didn’t make the list, owing to the fact that either the last few entries in the series were inconsistent, or weren’t simply that great. The following list contains my top 100 film series that I have rated since joining IMDb in July 2016. I have arranged them by averaging out the scores I have given each movie in said series since I started rating them. This does mean that a good series could be hampered by a bad movie but it is what it is. This also means that not every series I have ever watched is included just the ones I have watched/rewatched since joining this site. Remakes don't count towards a series, only it's sequels.
