Australia take control of WTC final as India contribute to own downfall

Photograph: Alex Davidson/ICC/Getty Images Australia’s Mitchell Starc celebrates dismissing Virat Kohli on day two of the World Test Championship final. Photograph: Alex Davidson/ICC/Getty Images On a day of unbroken sunshine at the Oval India toiled in Australia’s shadow. Ascendant at the end of day one, Pat Cummins’ side were resplendent at stumps on day two and, though Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane led something of a late fightback, India ended the day on 151 for five, still 318 behind. They will feel they contributed to their own downfall. There was some unexceptional bowling, occasionally downright wayward, as Australia reached a total of 469. Later Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara both fell to superlative deliveries, but they would have had a better chance of impeding their progress towards the stumps had they attempted to get their bats in the way. Read more If this game is drawn the trophy is shared, which rather takes away the incentive for a side to take any risks once they fall behind in the contest. India’s intention at the end of Australia’s innings must have been to slowly, carefully, find a foothold in the cliff face. Perhaps they picked up on the fervour of the crowd, who greeted every run as if the scorer had just won a lifetime achievement Bafta, but little about what progress they made at the start of their innings was calm or careful. India vs Australia Highlights, WTC Final: AUS beat IND by 209 runs, become 1st team to win all major ICC tournaments

India vs Australia Highlights, WTC 2023 Final Day 5: India's wait for an elusive ICC title extended as they were humbled by Pat Cummins and Co. by 209 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval on Sunday. India, who needed 444 to win in the second innings, were bundled out for 234 with Australia wrapping the contest in the opening session of the play on final day. Australia dictated the proceedings from Day 1, with Travis Head and Steve Smith knocking a century each to drive Australia to 469 in the first innings. The top-order failed to put a show and a gritty 89 by Ajinkya Rahane, with vital contribution from Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja helped India save the follow-on. India showed signs of comeback in the second innings but a 93-run stand between Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc powered them to 270/8 before declaring the innings. Chasing 444, India reached 164/3 at the close of play on Day 4. Scott Boland then gave Australia the perfect start on the final day as he got rid of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over. Kohli was caught at slips by Steve Smith for 49, while Jadeja was caught-behind for duck. Rahane then played a few shots before he was removed by Mitchell Starc for 46. Shardul Thakur, who scored a half-century in the first innings, failed to open his account this time. The wickets kept tumbling and it was Nathan Lyon, who inflicted the final blow to seal the match for India. Catch the Highlights of India vs Australia Live Score,...
