How many more deaths does it take to finally get speed control on the recently refurbished road in our area in Uttarakhand, North India? The most recent deadly accident due to a speedy inconsiderate driver is this big adult dog. He died a couple of days ago, hit by racing bus. We are heartbroken as it is not the first case. The situation is serious as many drivers of motorbikes, passenger cars, buses and trucks take this road as racing track. Great to have new surface roads and be able to drive smoothly, but sadly there are many reckless drivers who go full speed through our residential and school area. We have motorway-like roads but zero security measures in place. Zero pedestrians for people to walk. Zero speed limiting measures, not even simple signage! I implore all drivers to slow down and be attentive. We have children, students, old people, cows and dogs walking on / along this road all day long, from early morning. And I ask the responsible decision makers to do the needful to make the roadsides save again – for people and animals. If drivers are not forced to slow down, the new roads will be dangerous, life-threatening public places. Proactive measures could be painted lines, radar trailer, digital solar-powered “your speed” lightsigns, speed bumper / chicanes, standard speed limit signs and / or penalties. Life is precious.
