Mineral exploration to boost Bihar's economy: Janak Ram

State mines and geology minister Janak Ram said the state has already been allotted four blocks, including one each in Aurangabad and Gaya districts (for mining of potash) and two in Rohtas district (for mining of chromium and nickel). The process of auctioning these blocks is likely to be completed shortly, he added. The minister added mining of potash would boost the fertilizer industries of Bihar, while chromium and nickel can be used in the manufacture of several consumer items, including mobile and aviation-related products. “All this will certainly help the state government in generating new employment opportunities for the youths of the state and improving the state’s economy,” he said. Ram said detailed investigations for other economic minerals were being carried out by different teams of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the investigations have already indicated rich reserves of various minerals. “Work for estimating reserves of coal and fire clay in Bhagalpur district and mica in Nawada district is also in considerable progress,” the minister added. Giving details of the availability of economic minerals in the state, GSI director Bishwapriya said a number of minerals, including alkaline earth (locally known as ‘Reh’), copper, graphite, gold, iron ores, kyanite, limestone, pyrite, silica sand, tin uranium and barium are found in varying proportions in different parts of the state. The state is the principal holder of country’s pyrite resources, possessing...

Bihar to allow exploration of India’s ‘largest’ gold reserve in Jamui

The Bihar government has decided to accord permission for exploration of the "country's largest" gold reserve in Jamui district, a senior official said on Saturday. As per a Geological Survey of India (GSI) survey, around 222.88 million tonnes of gold reserve, including 37.6 tonnes of mineral-rich ore, are present in Jamui district. “The state Mines and Geology Department is in consultation with agencies engaged in exploration, including GSI and the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), for exploration of gold reserves in Jamui.” "The consultation process started after analysing the GSI findings which indicated the presence of gold in areas such as Karmatia, Jhajha and Sono in Jamui district," Additional Chief Secretary cum Mines Commissioner Harjot Kaur Bamhrah told PTI. She said the State government is likely to sign an MoU with a Central agency or agencies for G3 (preliminary) stage exploration within a month's time. In certain areas, G2 (general) exploration can also be carried out, Ms. Bamhrah said. Union Minister of Mines Pralhad Joshi had last year informed the Lok Sabha that Bihar holds the highest share of India's gold reserves. In a written reply, he had said that Bihar has 222.885 million tonnes of gold metal, which amounts to 44% of the total gold reserves in the country. "As per the National Mineral Inventory, the total resources of primary gold ore in the country as on 1.4.2015 are estimated at 501.83 million tonnes with 654.74 tonnes of gold metal...

GSI refutes claims of 222.8 million tons of gold reserve in Bihar's Jamui district

KOLKATA: The The GSI in its official statement disowned such reports saying it has not estimated any resources of gold deposit in the However, it is true that the GSI, with its headquarters in Kolkata, has been executing exploration works in the Jamui district of Bihar since 2016 for Iron and has conducted one gold exploration project in 2012-13. It is to inform that there is no mention of 222.8 million tons of gold reserve, including 27.6 tons of mineral-rich ore in any of its reports. The GSI strongly condemns such misleading and unsubstantiated news reports attributed to the GSI by a certain section of media. There was another news report stating "GSI has reported underground gold reserve in Bargarh district, Odisha”. It is to state that the GSI has never carried out any gold exploration activities in the Bargarh district of Odisha till date. This area was studied for a reconnaissance survey for primary source rock for diamonds during 2001-02, 2019-20 & 2021-22, and for fluoride incidences in Bargarh & Bolangir districts during 2021-22 under geo-environmental appraisal studies. Therefore, the GSI firmly refutes such fictitious news published by media houses. The GSI also strongly refutes the news of “Gold Mines Found in Nellore district” reported in certain media sections in Andhra Pradesh. In the Nellore district, the GSI is conducting base metal exploration work since 2021 and no gold exploration is being conducted by it in the district hence the news report published...

Bihar district in spotlight after Centre’s largest gold reserve remark

On Wednesday, the Union minister in a written reply to a question raised by BJP Bihar state president Sanjay Jaiswal, MP, revealed that around 222.885 million tones of gold metal is available, including 37.6 tones of mineral-rich ore, in Jamui district alone. “The country has a total primary gold ore reserve of 501.83 tonnes. Of which, 654.74 tonnes are gold. Of this, 44% gold has been found only in Bihar,” said Jaiswal, quoting the reply of the union mining minister in his letter in the lower House. On being contacted, Jamui District Magistrate Avneesh Kumar Singh said, “I sought a report from Sono Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar after the matter was raised in the parliament. The CO’s report is based on a survey earlier conducted by a Geological Survey of India (GSI) team in the Karmatia goldfield in the district, near the Jharkhand border.” GSI had last visited the area to conduct a survey in 2015. “The team stayed at the Sono block headquarters for several months after which it submitted its report to the Union government. Since then there is no development on this front,” the DM told TNIE. He, however, revealed that it would prove a game-changer for the entire Naxal affected belt, if the high-ups in the union ministry took up the matter and excavation started in the goldfield. Karmatia village under Churhait panchayat is spread over 1,000 acres of land, which has a strong possibility of having gold reserves, the DM said.
