MP Lokayukta probes collapse of statues at Mahakal Lok corridor

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta on Thursday launched an investigation into the collapse and damage of six of the seven Saptarishi idols at the grand Mahakal Lok corridor in Among the points of investigation is whether there was corruption and when it was decided to use fibre-reinforced plastic for the idols. A team from the Lokayukta will visit the site on Saturday. This is the third case related to Mahakal Lok corridor being investigated by the Lokayukta organization. According to sources, Lokayukta Justice N K Gupta has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the incident. Several devotees were present when the idols toppled; fortunately, no injuries were reported. Officials have attributed the incident to gusty winds. The Mahakal Lok corridor, estimated at Rs 419 crore, is part of the first phase of the Rs 850-crore Mahakaleshwar Temple Corridor Development Project. Congress claims corruption in project With assembly elections barely six months away, the May 28 incident has sparked a political battle. The opposition Congress has hit out at the BJP government, alleging corruption in the project and demanding an investigation into the "sub-standard" construction. Ujjain Collector Kumar Purshottam informed that "there are a total of 160 idols installed at the Mahakal Lok corridor, out of them six fell down as strong winds swept through the area." BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta organization has issued an ultimatum to Ujjain Smart City to submit documents pertaining to the construction of Mahakal Lok Corridor. According to sources, Lokayukta officers have sent a reminder to the authorities in connection with the second complaint, adding to the ongoing investigation into three separate cases, including the collapse of six of the Saptarishi idols during a thundershower on May 28. If the documents are not provided, Lokayukta warns, the special police establishment (SPE) will be instructed to proceed with seizures. The second complaint was filed by a resident of Tarana in Ujjain district regarding alleged corruption in the project. Lokayukta sought tender documents as part of probe The Lokayukta took note of it and asked for a response from the executive director of Ujjain Smart City Project in December 2022. Despite multiple reminders, there was no response, say officials. The Lokayukta has also sought tender documents as part of its probe into the toppling of Saptarishi statues. The Lokayukta's probe into the Saptarishi incident includes finding out when the decision was made to use fibre-reinforced plastic for the idols in Mahakal Lok and whether this decision was made "transparently and in accordance with proper procedures".
