Ninety-six birds were culled, and 5,320 eggs were destroyed in the epicentre of the outbreak here, State Animal Husbandry Director Chandan Kumar told PTI. The outbreak was reported on March 3 in Ranchi, barely a week after the spread of the bird flu disease in Bokaro district led to the culling of 4,000 chickens and ducks. "The central team took stock of the situation and visited the burial site of the poultry. They expressed satisfaction over the protocol and standard operating procedures followed by the state," Kumar said.He said 4,882 eggs were destroyed at the epicentre on Friday. RANCHI: The rapid response and surveillance teams formed by the Ranchi district administration on Monday reached the seven infection zones located within one km area of the bird flu outbreak at Jail More area to cull the chickens and destroy the eggs. The Union government-approved labs in Kolkata and Bhopal confirmed the presence of H5N1 virus in a dozen chickens which had died at Union tribal affairs minister Arjun Munda’s house last week, prompting the department of state animal husbandry to sound an alert. Ranchi was the second district after Bokaro to report confirmed bird flu cases in the past few weeks. The teams, comprising officials from the local police, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), and the department of district animal husbandry, began door-to-door visits. “Culling will be carried out mostly for the chickens being reared by the residents located within one km radius unless there are reports of any fatality outside it,” said district animal husbandary department official He said, “As of now, 96 poultry birds have been culled and 438 eggs destroyed. We have culled most of the chickens reared by people within the one km zone.” Sources in the surveillance teams on Sunday had identified around 310 birds. Ranchi has been hit by the H5N1 virus, days after thousands of birds had to be killed in Bokaro district. Seven infection zones have been identified in Ranchi and culling was initiated in these places to stem the spread of the virus. Areas within a 10 km radius have been declared as surveillance zone. The Animal Husbandry Department has issued an advisory, urging people to inform it if they see dead birds.In rare cases, avian flu can affect humans, so the state government has asked for extra vigil.
