BlackBerry sells smartphone patents to Huawei

Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported records from the US Patent and Trademark Office (US PTO) confirmed the transfer of the intellectual property, while BlackBerry's CFO also confirmed the reports in an investor call earlier this week. BlackBerry was once the market leader in smartphones at a time when such devices were enterprise tools rather then mass-market consumer products. Businesses valued the security and management capabilities of the handsets, as well as other features such as QWERTY keyboards. • These are the • And the • Here are the BlackBerry Huawei patent deal However, the company then known as RIM failed to adapt to changing market trends. Apple and Android manufacturers were able to offer more desirable handsets and eroded BlackBerry’s advantage in security. The failure to launch a more modern operating system earlier than 2013 was the last straw and the company withdrew from the market in 2016. With that in mind, the 90 sold to Huawei represent a drop in the ocean. But some patents reflect key innovations developed by the company during its heyday such as the presentation of text and images on devices depending on its physical orientation and the geotagging of photos. However others reflect BlackBerry’s heritage in security such as the “sharing data to a group of devices.” Some observers have questioned whether BlackBerry should be selling such IP to Huawei given it has attracted national security concerns among some of Canada’s allies. 5 phone brands we'd like to see make a comeback after BlackBerry

We aren’t surprised. Original owner RIM stopped being the force behind BlackBerry in 2016 when the name was licensed to Chinese tech giant TCL. TCL took a leaner approach but its reign ended in 2020, and then the brand passed on to OnwardMobility, an American company. BlackBerry returning to the US is a refreshing change after years of Chinese brands dominating most new developments in mobile. But where TCL was already a huge manufacturing operation, OnwardMobility had to set up new manufacturing partnerships for this BlackBerry project. (Image credit: Wileyfox) The UK’s Wileyfox lasted around three years, from 2015 to 2018, but we have some good memories of using its phones. Wileyfox made affordable Androids with surprisingly decent innards, like a OnePlus for the budget buyer. Back in 2015 Wileyfox seemed directly inspired by that company, in the CyanogenMod software and finishes it used, as well as its aggressive pricing strategy. Now OnePlus has been subsumed into the guts of giant Oppo, we want more of that renegade spirit back in the world of phones. There’s even better tech for Wileyfox to use in this era too. Both MediaTek and Qualcomm now offer lower mid-range chipsets that can handle top-end games like Fortnite well, and make Android navigation feel pretty similar to that of a top-end phone. As the CyanogenMod software has been discontinued, Wileyfox could perhaps team up with Google and make these Android One devices. Phones like the Could it happen? After Wiley...

The transformation of BlackBerry from mobile heavyweight into something else entirely

Many people know BlackBerry as the company behind the iconic range of mobile devices, which were as beloved among regular consumers as they were the professionals they were built for. However, BlackBerry hasn’t been a hardware company for more than half a decade now. Although the firm has licensed its branding to other manufacturers, it hasn’t launched a smartphone of its own since 2016. The company also recently killed off BlackBerry OS, rendering a host of older devices unusable, and sold off a range of legacy patents relating to its phones and other technologies. Instead, the modern BlackBerry is all about software and cybersecurity. The firm’s primary source of revenue is a line of services that help secure mobile devices and various other endpoints, and software that enables rich functionality inside connected vehicles. According to Sarah Tatsis, an executive who has spent more than twenty years at BlackBerry, the pivot away from hardware was more natural than it might appear. “There were quite a few challenges, because it was a big transition, but there was also a lot of opportunity,” she told TechRadar Pro. “From the beginning, there has always been a focus on cybersecurity at BlackBerry. We’ve always thought a lot about how to move data through our infrastructure in a secure way. And that know-how is applicable across many different spaces.” The fall from grace At the peak of its powers around 2010, BlackBerry held more than 40% of the mobile device market in the U...

BlackBerry will die on January 4th — for real this time

Dear friends, we’re gathered here today to mourn the death of that once-beloved monarch of the mobile world: BlackBerry. And, yes, I realize that this is not the first time we’ve announced the death of the company or its devices (and, for reasons I’ll explain below, it likely won’t be the last) but this is a very definite ending for legacy BlackBerry hardware. If, for whatever inexplicable reason, you or someone you love is still using an original BlackBerry, then we recommend you make it a New Year’s resolution to pry it gently but firmly from their hands. From January 4th onwards, it’ll be little more than a paperweight. (Though BlackBerry devices running Android will continue to work as normal.) As alluded to above, though, this might not be the last BlackBerry death we announce. The company has experienced a slow and torturous decline since its dominant era in the late 2000s, when its QWERTY keyboards and reputation for security gave it a 50 percent market share in the US, but such a storied brand has to be wrung for its last dregs of value. (Its parent company, BlackBerry Limited, has pivoted to Well, the clock is rather ticking on that one (OnwardMobility hasn’t shared any news or updates on its website since January 2021), but whether that particular effort lives or dies, it will at least give us a chance to gather again for another funeral. We really must get together some time under kinder circumstances. How are your aunt and uncle anyway? Most Popular • It’s not ...
