19 injured in blast furnace mishap at Tata Steel’s Dhenkanal plant in Odisha

At least 19 workers sustained burn injuries following an accident at in the blast furnace of Tata Steel’s Meramandali plant in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district on Tuesday. The mishap occurred at around 1 pm due to the escape of hot steam from a pipe. Engineers and labourers, who were inspecting the blast furnace, sustained injuries after hot water fell on them, said official sources. The injured, who were rushed to a private hospital in Cuttack, are undergoing for further treatment, of whom two are critical and admitted in the ICU. Dhenkanal collector Saroj Kumar Sethi, superintendent of police Gyana Ranjan Mohapatra and other senior officials reached the site to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, a statement issued by Tata Steel said all the emergency protocol services were activated immediately after the accident and the area has been cordoned off. “The company is ensuring all necessary information and support to the families of the affected personnel. We are working closely with relevant authorities on ground and have initiated an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident,” said the statement. Though the plant with production capacity of 5.6 million tonne per annum (mtpa) was owned by Bhushan Steel Limited, Bamnipal Steel Limited (BNPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, acquired a controlling stake of 72.65% in the company in November 2018 and renamed as Tata Steel BSL Limited. According to local media reports, the accident happened at the blast furnace power plant of the company in Odisha’s Dhenkanal. The company said that the accident took place at around 1 pm during inspection, which resulted in the injuries of 19 people. They were immediately moved to the Occupational Health Centre inside the plant, and then eventually moved to Cuttack for further treatment in their ambulance and were accompanied by a doctor and paramedics. “We are working closely with relevant authorities and conducting our own internal investigation. Safety remains our top priority and we're committed to learning from this incident. More details will follow as they become available,” the company said.
