Overwatch 2 story missions will cost $15 for ‘permanent access,’ Blizzard says

Overwatch 2’s new season 5 starts Tuesday, June 13, bringing with it a vaguely Dungeons & Dragons-esque theme to the hero shooter’s battle pass and the return of the Summer Games event. The season after that, season 6 of Overwatch 2, promises to be much bigger, bringing the long-awaited Overwatch 2 story missions, which will be part of a season called Invasion. Story missions, which are separate from the Overwatch 2, will cost $15 for “permanent access,” Blizzard says. That will grant access to three missions set in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg (an unreleased map location). Blizzard plans to sell Overwatch 2: Invasion story missions access as part of a bundle that also includes 1,000 Overwatch Coins (the game’s premium currency), and a new Sojourn legendary skin. That bundle will also include access to Blizzard confirmed to Polygon that access to Overwatch 2’s story missions are part of the paid bundle, meaning players will have to own an Invasion bundle if they want to play story missions. That includes access to the content during season 6 and permanently after. For players who prefer to pay more, there’s a separate bundle: the Overwatch 2: Ultimate Invasion bundle, which costs $40. That includes the basic Invasion bundle, plus: • The Null Sector premium battle pass, with 20 battle pass level skips • An additional 1,000 Overwatch Coins, for a total of 2,000 Overwatch Coins • Two additional Legendary skins for Cassidy and Kiriko Image: Blizzard Entertainment Se...

FTC files injunction to block Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard

Microsoft Corp. has another headwind in its proposed $69 billion acquisition of videogame publisher Activision Blizzard Inc., in the form of an injunction from the Federal Trade Commission. Late Monday, the FTC confirmed reports earlier in the day that it would block the acquisition, and filed +3.19% and Activision Blizzard +0.27% in a San Francisco federal court. Antitrust complaints against the deal generally revolve around concerns that Microsoft, with its Xbox gaming console, could withhold hit Activision Blizzard videogame franchises such as “Call of Duty” and “Overwatch” from competing console platforms. “A preliminary injunction is necessary to maintain the status quo and prevent interim harm to competition,” the FTC said in its filing. “This loss of competition would likely result in significant harm to consumers in multiple markets at a pivotal time for the industry.” In a statement late Monday, Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chair and president, said “We welcome the opportunity to present our case in federal court. We believe accelerating the legal process in the U.S. will ultimately bring more choice and competition to the market.” In mid-May, In late May, Microsoft confirmed to MarketWatch earlier reports that the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority had tentatively scheduled Microsoft shares closed Monday up 1.6% at $331.85, and Activision Blizzard’s finished down 0.8% at $79.77, compared with a 0.9% gain by the S&P 500 index +1.22% , a 1.5% rise by the tech...

Microsoft's planned Activision Blizzard merger temporarily blocked by US judge

On Monday, June 12, 2023, the Federal Trade Commission sued to block Microsoft from completing its deal to buy video game company Activision Blizzard, the latest antitrust challenge to the proposed merger but one that could hasten its conclusion. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, File) SAN FRANCISCO – Microsoft's planned $69 billion purchase of video game company Activision Blizzard was blocked by a federal judge Tuesday, giving more time for an antitrust review of the deal. U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in San Francisco ruled in support of a temporary restraining order In a court filing Monday, the commission had sought both a restraining order and injunction to stop Microsoft’s acquisition of the California company behind hit games such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush Saga. Microsoft, The judge said her order temporarily blocking the deal “is necessary to maintain the status quo” while the Federal Trade Commission's legal cases against it are still pending. The bar for issuing an urgent restraining order is lower than it is to issue a preliminary injunction blocking the deal. A hearing on the commission's request for an injunction is set for June 22. The The commission said it brought its case to a federal court this week because it was concerned that Microsoft was trying to imminentl...

FTC sues to prevent Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sued to block Microsoft’s acquisition of game developer Activision Blizzard, according to a complaint filed Monday in San Francisco federal court. The regulatory agency filing seeks a temporary restraining order and an injunction to stop the tech giant and maker of the Xbox game system from acquiring the developer behind popular games including “Call of Duty,” adding an additional hurdle to Microsoft’s push to take over the company for $69 billion. “Both a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction are necessary because Microsoft and Activision have represented that they may consummate the proposed acquisition at any time,” the FTC said in a complaint. “We welcome the opportunity to present our case in federal court,” said Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chairman and president, in a statement. “We believe accelerating the legal process in the U.S. will ultimately bring more choice and competition to the market,” Smith added. The FTC last year sought to block the merger in a case brought to the agency’s in-house judge. A trial is set to begin Aug. 2 on that decision. The FTC’s complaint asks the court to put the order in place to block the deal from closing by Thursday. At the same time, the deal is facing legal challenges globally. In addition to the FTC’s challenge, a United Kingdom regulator is also seeking to block the deal, and an appeal hearing is also slated to begin in the U.K. shortly ahead of the FTC’s.
