First weeks, community life – The Firefly with a Travelbug

Here I am, it’s been about 3 weeks since I landed in Paradise! And it’s about time to let you know what I’ve been up to! Let me introduce you to the team of climate change activists I’ll be sharing my experience with. There’s Conor from London, Meg and Sabrina from California, Vicky my roomie, Jost and Simon from Germany, and our cool teacher Jesper from Denmark. We will spend the next 6 months together fighting climate change in St Vincent! There are 2 other teams present at the school for the moment, one with 6 people (who are leaving at the end of the month) and one with 17 people who will stay another 6 weeks. Plus the rest of the teachers and administration it’s about 35 people living here at the moment. There is quite a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and ages, most people are quite young, about 60% just out of high school! And the rest between 25 and 35 more or less! The people here have a very interesting view of life and are here because they want to make a difference and “change the world” in their own way! We are all a bit crazy idealists and utopists, but man people are so inspiring and motivating, the vibe is very positive! Living in a community is quite a different experience from what I’ve been living until now! It kind of reminds me of my boarding school years… 15years ago… 😉 But in a warm climate, in the middle of nowhere, and with the beach down the road!!!! We all have tasks and areas of responsibilities in order to keep the school clean and runnin...

Night Owls, Blogging and WFH

Blogging and online publishing offer a 100% flexible schedule (among many other entrepreneurial pursuits). I do appreciate not having to ever set an alarm. I’m of the view that collateral perks such as flexibility, work from anywhere, be your own boss are probably not sufficient motivators to overcome a dislike of this line of work (or any line of work). I believe you need to like the work as well to be able to put in the monster, sustained effort required. However, I may be underestimating the importance of work schedule flexibility for some folks… namely night owls. Although I believe it’s safe to say all of us like flexibility. I’m a morning person so it doesn’t apply all that much to me. That said, I appreciate not having to set an alarm ever. If you’re a night owl, you likely suffer a big disadvantage in our society. If you work a 9 to 5 or have other obligations forcing you to wake up earlier than you’d prefer, you’re probably chronically short of sleep. Night Owl Study I believe it. Forcing yourself up too early a day or two in a row, while unpleasant, is manageable. Having to force yourself up too early for your natural sleep schedule every day, year-in and year-out, takes its toll. 10% of the population are extreme night owls. 10% are extreme early birds. 80% fall on the spectrum in between [ Because night owls are the minority, the working and school schedule is what it is. Not only are mornings rough but nights are too. Many night owls on the 9 to 5 schedule g...

Julia Roberts Hits The Beach, Dabo & Matt Campbell Share A Ride, Plus Ian Book's Terrifying Night – OutKick

It was one of those magical blogging nights As I’ve told you guys many, many times, I’ve had a long blogging career where I’ve found myself embedded in some of the biggest Internet stories of the last 12-14 years. I was online late one night in 2009 when a blogger friend of mine said he’d found what he thought were Erin Andrews peephole videos that had been uploaded to some video-storing website deep into the web. I remember the guy who tipped me off to Rex Ryan’s feet videos while I was sitting at my newspaper day job. I vividly remember the RG3 wedding eve drama (his first marriage) that had my email inbox lit up. I’ll never forget the big ones. Monday was a very similar day because we had the Married With Children and Baywatch. Delta ‘Karen’ won’t be anywhere near as earth-shattering as those other stories were for their time, but it’s one of those Internet stories with so many layers that it can carry a website for weeks. Patricia Cornwall, the lady charged with assaulting the old man on the Delta flight, has left the Internet with a treasure trove of content from her 20s when she was in bikinis or naked for Hef’s entertainment empire. And she’s flat-out nuts. Multiple arrests over the last year. Typically this is all the ingredients for an absolute pageview explosion. Clicks on clicks. Clicks, clicks, clicks from you maniacs. I sat here for hours today trying to track down the federal document that connected all the dots. Connected the Married With Children episode to...

I was creating the best content I could and I really enjoyed it as a hobby while working a fulltime job. And then in 2011 disaster struck. I received an email from Google stating I was kicked out of AdSense. It was a regular day at work. I was in Michigan working for a company doing some IT work and I...
