Brendon McCullum: England appoint former New Zealand captain as new men's Test coach

He succeeds Chris Silverwood, who left his position in February following the heavy Ashes defeat in Australia. McCullum said he is aiming to "move the team forward into a more successful era" alongside new captain Ben Stokes. He added: "In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we've confronted them head-on." England are winless in nine Tests and have only won one of their past 17 matches. McCullum's appointment continues England's post-Ashes overhaul, with Rob Key having taken over as managing director last month, replacing Andrew Strauss, who had stepped in on an interim basis following the sacking of Ashley Giles in February. Root stood down as captain following March's 1-0 series defeat in the West Indies and was replaced by Stokes. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) selection panel of Key, strategic adviser Strauss, chief executive Tom Harrison and performance director Mo Bobat said McCullum was the "outstanding candidate" for the role. "I've enjoyed several robust conversations with Rob Key about the direction of travel for the team and have found his enthusiasm contagious," added McCullum. "I'm no stranger to bringing about change within a team environment, and I can't wait to get started. "Ben Stokes is the perfect character to inspire change around him, and I look forward to working closely with him to build a succe...

England announce appointment of New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum as Test coach

England has confirmed the appointment of New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum as their new men's Test coach. McCullum, who was recently coaching the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, was originally seen as a long shot to be appointed the new England boss, however the 40-year-old impressed in the interview process and was the England and Wales Cricket Board's unanimous choice. England's Test team has struggled in recent years, winning only one of their last 17 Tests, with previous coach Chris Silverwood being sacked in January, while captain Joe Root resigned from the role last month. “Obviously England struggled over the last couple of years, and the style of play has been questioned as well, and it gives me the opportunity to try and bring in that real freshness,” McCullum told SENZ radio in New Zealand. “Trying to bring a team which is rock-bottom at the moment out of that situation and try and build something long term, sustainable and successful, that was where the challenge lay.” With England's next Test series to come at home against New Zealand in June, McCullum will team up with new skipper Ben Stokes, who like his coach was born a Kiwi. McCullum likened his captain's playing style to his own and vowed England would be a leader in a general resurgence of Test cricket worldwide. “The way Ben Stokes plays the game is very similar to the way I play the game and how I love coaching the game, and that’s to play with a bit of freedom and to try to put pr...

New captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum will lead England in the first Test against New Zealand on Thursday England v New Zealand, first LV Insurance Test Venue: Lord's Dates: 2-6 June Coverage: Daily highlights on BBC Two and iPlayer. Ball-by-ball Test Match Special commentary on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra, Radio 4 LW, online, tablets, mobiles and BBC Sport app. Live text commentary and clips on the BBC Sport website and app. Brendon McCullum has changed English cricket once. Now he's being paid to do it again. Previously, it was inadvertent. His batting, captaincy and the New Zealand team he led to the final of the 2015 World Cup formed the inspiration for England's turnaround from one-day no-hopers to world champions in the space of four years. This time, McCullum's influence will come from inside the dressing room - his task to revive a Test side that have been battered and bruised to the tune of one win in 17 matches. At a stroke, his appointment made England trendy again. Not only through the excitement of what a McCullum-led outfit might actually play like against his native New Zealand on Thursday, but also because he is the first coach to turn up at Lord's with rolled-up jeans revealing bare ankles and no socks. By his own admission, the 40-year-old has given up a "good life" in order to answer England's call, following coaching gigs in the Indian and Caribbean Premier Leagues, TV punditry and a breakfast radio show back home in New Zealand. But it wa...

Colin Munro on Brendon McCullum's influence and Bazball

"I was really underdone," he recalls. "I was asked to stay on after the T20s and was told I was just going to be there as cover. I neglected my batting in the nets because I was just getting ready for the one-day series afterwards, so I didn't do a lot of red-ball preparation with the bat. I got out first ball in the first innings, got 15 in the second, and then was never even considered again." Munro continued to score heavily for Auckland in the Plunket Shield and made occasional appearances for New Zealand A, but the door stayed shut. "I honestly thought I deserved a spot," he says. "And not just because of my average but the weight of runs that I scored. At the time, you're very disappointed - and a little bit bitter - that you're not playing Test cricket, because that's what you wanted to do." He reconciled himself to the fact that, with McCullum counter-attacking in the middle order, there might not be room for another player in the same mould. "Maybe he didn't want to go down the route of having two cowboys in the middle," Munro says. "At that time, he probably thought that two ultra-aggressive players through that middle order is probably not the best way to go. Now, in this day and age, there's probably space for two or three players that could play that role." But after McCullum retired in 2016, Munro found himself looking at some of the players New Zealand picked and thinking: "'How did they get there?' I felt like I had to ask some tough questions to the manage...
