Butterfly movie review & film summary (2000)

"Butterfly" takes place during that brief moment in Spain between the formation of the Republic and the Civil War. A history lesson will be necessary for most viewers, and the movie provides it, explaining that the old order of church, military and monarchy was overthrown by a new leftist government, legally elected, which was then challenged by the right. The war that followed was like a rehearsal for World War II, with Hitler testing his Luftwaffe and Russia supplying the communist side. The story was more complicated, because the Russians also fought for control of the left against the democratic socialists and the anarchists; George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia tells the whole story from the point of view of an observer who was left-wing but anti-communist. The point is that freedom flickered before being crushed by big players on the world stage, who ushered in Franco and decades of dictatorship. People dared to admit their real religious beliefs (or lack of them), and to prefer democracy to the king. And as "Butterfly" begins, a 7-year-old boy is preparing for his first day of school in a village in Galicia. His name is Moncho ( The boy's father is a tailor. Moncho's home life is happy, and enlivened by his older brother's enthusiastic interest in the opposite sex. There are, however, scandalous secrets in the village, which lend an ironic twist to one of the subplots. But in general, life is good--until the fascist uprising changes their lives forever. "Butterfly" i...

Butterfly Review: This attempted thriller is an assault on one’s senses

Story: Vyjayanthi (Bhumika) and Geetha (Anupama) are sisters who grew up on their own after the demise of their parents. On a fateful day, when Vyjayanthi, a popular lawyer, is out of town, her two children get kidnapped; Geetha, who is supposed to protect them, takes up the job of rescuing these kids upon herself. What secrets did she uncover? Review: Thrillers need to evoke excitement and suspense and engage the audience. The film, Butterfly, begins on a regular yet promising note with Vyjayanthi’s triumphant court scene and happy family, the camaraderie between the sisters, and Geetha and Viswa’s relationship. After establishing the locale - Butterfly Nest gated community and other characters at its own pace, the plot tries to metamorphose into a thriller with the missing kids. While it holds attention till this point, the events that follow and the remainder of the story will test your patience. Once ‘Operation butterfly’ starts, Geetha turns a magnet to all the problems in the world, and there is no respite. Everybody she meets has an ulterior motive or is filled with misogyny. The length of the movie, too many challenges, and lack of engaging narrative make this 2 hours 16 minutes movie a frustrating watch. Anupama, as Geetha, does a decent job, but her character suffers from poor writing, just like the rest of the movie. On the other hand, Bhumika Chawla, playing a successful lawyer, and Rao Ramesh, a harassing husband, do their jobs well in their limited screen tim...

Butterfly (2022)

I thought the mystery and thriller will give goosebumps but this is worst. There is long lag in movie. Songs were unbearable to hear. I can definitely say this movie spoiled my new year vibe. Thank you butterfly movie. Twist is very good but I think direction isn't good. 2 hours 15 minutes is very long for this story. You could have completed early without those idiotic songs and the bloody stuff in-between for begging money. There is no need to show everything because audience are not that dumb to watch movies. Cut the crap please. Make it quick. First 1 hour 30 minutes is almost very very boring. You can understand my feeling because i took this much time to write a review on new year 😂😂. I'm literally upset very upset 😭. My expectations for the movie Butterfly based on the trailer was very high. The trailer looked like a fast-paced crime thriller. In reality, the movie was a slow burn, especially in the first half. The plot of the movie was expanded and explained too much, it ended up as a dragging and boring experience till climax. The reason this movie deserves 1 star is the twist and climax of the movie, that justifies it's a movie that belongs to the crime and mystery genre. Watching this movie for the new year absolutely spoiled my new year vibe too. 😂 The one thing I ended up liking is the first IMDb review for this movie and I absolutely understand how that person like the rest of the audience must have felt after watching this movie. Overall, this is the worst t...

'Butterfly' Movie Review: An invested Anupama Parameswaran can’t salvage this amateurish thriller

Express News Service It takes hardly two minutes to realise that Butterfly is a poorly made film when we see the camera tracking towards a TV journalist who has to question a police officer about the murder of a kid at the crime spot. It’s a trivial scene we have seen play out a million times before. Here, the extras playing journalists take a two-second gap to allow the camera to move closer before they can start delivering their lines. One can clearly sense that it is poorly staged and acted. These are attributes that can be used to describe the entirety of Butterfly. The filmmaking oscillates between failing to complement the emotions of the characters and overdoing the cliches that evoke unintentional laughter. Take, for instance, a scene that’s supposed to produce tension: Two kids are missing and their anxious aunt, Geetha (Anupama Parameswaran) is having a difficult time searching for them all over their apartment complex. When she comes to her home searching we get a static, wide angle that shows Geetha from afar, undoing the character’s crucial urgency and anxiety. Now, it might sound like nitpicking but no, the film makes you wish it got the basics right about staging. Perhaps using a handheld camera and close-ups would have helped the filmmaker pronounce the apprehension and uncertainty Geetha is experiencing. Such creative decisions create a wide gap between the viewer and the film. You never really care for the missing children nor do you empathise with Geetha...
