At least 2 dead as 6.4

It struck around 7.4 miles west-southwest of Ferndale, the agency said. Two people, ages 72 and 83, died from medical emergencies after the quake, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told reporters. Emergency responders had been unable to get them to the appropriate facility in time, he said. Another 12 people were injured, Honsal said, though he expected that number to rise. The small city of Rio Dell, population roughly 3,300, was among the communities to have been hit hardest by the quake and the dozens of aftershocks that followed, Honsal said. The city was expected to be without water for 24 to 48 hours and more than 30 homes were damaged, Rio Dell City Manager Kyle Knopp told reporters. Fifteen of the houses had been "red tagged," or were determined to be uninhabitable, he said. Knopp estimated that as many 150 people could be displaced. "There's been significant damage in other areas but it has been acute here in Rio Dell," he said. Earthquake damage outside a building in Rio Dell, Calif., on Tuesday. Earthquake strikes Northern California, bringing significant shaking

Staff Video, USA TODAY A magnitude 6.2 The earthquake occurred just after noon and was centered off the coast about 210 miles northwest of San Francisco, just off a tiny town called Petrolia that’s home to fewer than 1,000 people. The nearest population center, Eureka, is about 45 miles north. That left only about 25,000 people in the range of strong or very strong shaking, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, though residents as far away as Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area reported feeling trembling. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s office of emergency services did not issue any evacuation orders, though a few roads were closed due to rockslides. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated economic losses of less than $10 million and no fatalities. The area last suffered an earthquake of a similar magnitude in 1993, when one person died, according to the USGS. As of Monday evening, no injuries have been reported butsome rural roads have experienced rock slides as a result of the earthquake, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. "We are seeing varying damages, most occurring in the Eel River Valley and South county areas. We have received some reports of structural damages to buildings, broken glass and items thrown from shelves at local businesses. Damage assessments are still underway," says Samantha Karges, public information specialist of theHumboldt County Sheriff's Office. The quake was "very scary,"according to Ranjeet Singh, owner of the Valley Groc...

At least 2 dead after 6.4 earthquake in Northern California

FORTUNA, Calif.— A powerful earthquake jolted Humboldt County early Tuesday, leaving at least two people dead, tens of thousands without power and widespread damage in its aftermath. Even in this seismically active region of Northern California known for large temblors, the 6.4 magnitude quake felt particularly violent to many longtime residents. Officials were still trying to tally the destruction hours later. The force of the shaking shattered windows, sent objects flying and damaged at least one historic bridge in the small communities south of Eureka. At least 11 people were injured. “It was the most intense earthquake that I’ve felt,” said Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes, whose hamlet was hard hit. “It was a long-duration earthquake, so it was not only significant in size at 6.4, it was also long.” According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, two people died as a result of medical emergencies during or just after the earthquake. There was one fatality in Rio Dell during the earthquake, Garnes said, but it is unclear whether it was among the two deaths reported by the Sheriff’s Office. A call came in during the earthquake about someone having difficulty breathing. The person went into cardiac arrest, and medics performed CPR, Garnes said. The person was taken to a hospital but did not survive. The quake was reported at 2:34 a.m. just offshore about 7½ miles southwest of Ferndale, Ferndale, Fortuna and Rio Dell were among the hardest hit areas, Mark Ghilarducci, the d...
