Unseen Camilla: the five ages of a future queen

A s of next month’s coronation, the Queen Consort will at last have ascended to the title of Queen – not Consort, not common-law, but fully legit It’s partly because she never gives interviews and partly because she doesn’t reveal much in her actions, which are standardly royal, but not very disclosing: good deeds and horses, essentially. It’s partly because she has functioned, for decades, as a cipher for other conversations. What do we think of adultery, marriage, divorce, the royal family, the leisure class, the finer gradations of social hierarchy? Of Charles? Of Diana? These debates have played out in sometimes hideously microscopic detail, with Camilla as object, but never subject. The result is that she is never more obscure than when everyone is talking about her. I mean object and subject in the grammatical sense, of course. The question of Camilla as a subject of the realm – and the attendant posh axioms about whether or not a prince can marry a subject, and who on earth he is supposed to marry if not – we will get to later. (The answer seems to be a cousin, or a German, or a German cousin.) Yet, thanks to the meticulous labours of royal-watchers, the bones of her life are known. These are the five ages of the queen-to-be. 1947-64: a remarkable childhood No, no, nothing truly remarkable happened – don’t get excited. Born in King’s College hospital in south London, to Rosalind née Cubitt and Bruce Shand, Camilla had plenty of notables in her family tree – includin...

Although she was born into an upper-class family, Camilla never puts on airs. “I have so many friends who, if I ever even vaguely look like getting uppity, which touch wood I never have, they would just say, ‘Look, come on, pull yourself together! Don’t be so bloody grand!’” she said in a rare interview in the Daily Mail’s You Magazine. A former flatmate even says she kept her bedroom in a state of chaos, reports Vanity Fair. King Charles III’s wife officially identified as Queen Camilla – The Virginian

King Charles III’s wife has been officially identified as Queen Camilla for the first time, with Buckingham Palace using the title on invitations for the monarch’s May 6 coronation. Camilla, who until now has been described asqueen consort,is given equal billing on the ornate medieval style invitations that will be sent to more than 2,000 guests and were unveiled on Tuesday. The new title is another step in the remarkable transformation of a woman once derided as a homewrecker because of her role in the breakdown of Charles’ marriage to the late Princess Diana. Charles and Camilla met long before the future king married Diana in 1981 and their relationship continued throughout the tumultuous marriage. That made Camilla an object of scorn among Diana’s many fans, who rallied around the princess as her marriage collapsed. But Camilla has won over much of the British public with her warmth and down-to-earth humor since she married Charles in a civil ceremony in 2005. The late Queen Elizabeth II early last year issued a statement saying she hoped Camilla would be known as “queen consort” when Charles became king. Camilla will be crowned alongside her husband onMay 6 at Westminster Abbey. Camilla will also have four pages. The ...

What to expect from our new Queen Consort, Camilla

This May, Camilla will officially be crowned as Queen Consort, a role and title she has held ever since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of last year. In the past few months, we have witnessed her transformation from the Duchess of Cornwall to this new, more high-profile position, giving us a taste of what to expect from our new Queen Consort. Her inaugural moments were, of course, marked by a period of national mourning. Here, she took on the immediate task of supporting her husband; accompanying him to each and every official event which took place, excelling in everything from tempering his frustrations (the now infamous 'pen gate') to intimate moments of condolence, spied through the windows of their car. Throughout it all, Camilla's preference for inhabiting a muted, calm presence in the background, was clear. It was in fact the new Chris Jackson // Getty Images It is a far cry from the part that Camilla will play in May, where she, following Since taking on her new role, Camilla has embarked on many solo engagements of her own, though always with the same un-showy, self-deprecating air. Her behaviour as Queen Consort thus far is very much in keeping with a woman who never once dreamed she would find herself in this position, not even after she first struck up a romantic entanglement with the future King. After all, with her iconic Farrah Fawcett hair, a plummy ex-smoker's voice and an affair which made her the nation’s ‘Other Woman’ behind her, Camilla ...
