Cefixime Oral Suspension

What is this medication? CEFIXIME (sef IX eem) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It treats some infections caused by bacteria. It will not work for colds, the flu, or other viruses. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Suprax What should I tell my care team before I take this medication? They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •bleeding problems •kidney disease •stomach or intestine problems (especially colitis) •an unusual or allergic reaction to cefixime, other cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics, other foods, dyes or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medication? Take this drug by mouth. Take it as directed on the prescription label at the same time every day. Shake well before using. Use a specially marked oral syringe, spoon, or dropper to measure each dose. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. Household spoons are not accurate. You can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food. Take all of this drug unless your health care provider tells you to stop it early. Keep taking it even if you think you are better. There may be unused or extra doses in the bottle after you finish the full course of antibiotics. Talk to your health care provider if you have questions about your dose. INDICATIONS AND USAGE Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections Cefixime for oral suspension is indicated in the treatment of adults and pediatric patients six months of age or older with uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by susceptible isolates of Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. Otitis Media Cefixime for oral suspension is indicated in the treatment of adults and pediatric patients six months of age or older with otitis media caused by susceptible isolates of Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes. (Efficacy for Streptococcus pyogenes in this organ system was studied in fewer than 10 infections.) Note: For patients with otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, overall response was approximately 10% lower for Cefixime than for the comparator.
