‘The Last Film Show’ (Chhello Show) movie review: A dreamy, moving tribute to cinema

Chhello Show (or The Last Film Show in English) is India's official entry to the 95th Academy Awards. Now, despite the makers rightfully using this as a marketing tool, this is a film that deserves to be seen without such overarching pressures. A personal, compelling film, Chhello Show is filmmaker Pan Nalin's love letter to cinema. Storyline: Mesmerised by cinema, a young boy pursues his dreams of capturing light and making movies With tender frames, the film pulls us into the world of Samay (Bhavin Rabari), a young boy from Chalala village in Gujarat, who lives with his father (Dipen Raval), mother (Richa Meena) and younger sister. One day, his father takes the family to a movie called 'Goddess Mahakali'. The year is 2010 when movies were still shot using film cameras and played through a film projector. The light from the projector, and the experience of watching the film give birth to a germ of curiosity in the mind of our young protagonist. After some very amusing events, he befriends a film projectionist named Fazal (Bhavesh Shrimali), and celluloid dreams begin to take shape in him. But Chhello Show isn't just a coming-of-age drama driven by Samay's obsession with cinema; it's also a film with a narrative that encapsulates the evolution of cinema and cinema theatres. Samay's curiosity about the films takes him on a quest to 'capture' light. After stealing a piece of film from the theatre, Samay converts a train coach into a makeshift camera obscura to project film f...

'Chhello Show' review: An ode to childhood innocence and love for cinema

Mane Prakash bhanvo che, Prakash maj thi vaarta bane che [I want to learn light, story emerges from light], nine-year-old Samay tells his Bapuji. Set in Kathiyawad (Saurashtra) region of Gujarat, Chhello Show ( The Last Film Show) is the story of Samay (Bhavin Rabari) who aspires to study 'light', and is fascinated by the way movies are projected and the process involved in making the reels. India’s official entry for Oscars 2023, directed by acclaimed director Pan Nalin and produced by many, including Roy Kapur Films, this Gujarati movie of 1.5 hours gives a refreshing feeling, especially at a time when majority of the Bollywood movies are not doing good. The best part of the movie is that you will hardly find anything 'filmy' in it. The locations (all from Saurashtra) are natural and so is the acting, especially of the child artists. Except for a couple of elders in the movie, all child artists are new and hail from the region. Samay has been an observer. He keenly watches the trail left behind by a jet even before his first exposure to a single-screen cinema hall in a nearby small town. Notwithstanding his Bapuji’s (Dipen Raval) warning that this would be his first and last film exposure as films are not good and has taken the family for the show as it is a movie of a Goddess, Samay keeps bunking school only to take a train and reach the cinema hall. Once when he is thrown out of the cinema hall as he did not have a ticket, he bumps into Fazal (Bhavesh Shrimali), the pr...

In a recent exclusive conversation with DNA, Pan Nalin shared his thoughts on Chhello Show being sent as India's entry to the Oscars as he said, "Am super excited, super thrilled, and happy. Every film is a labour of love and passion. I don't know how other films are made, but this one is made with years of hard work. The team has worked like a close-knit family, putting in so much passion, man hours and love, always believing in the film. It is such a great cast and crew that I always wondered what will be the way to recognize their hard work. This decision coming from FFI that we are India's official entry to the Oscars was the first joy." "And second joy, of course, was that a lot of distributors who worldwide are acquiring our film way before we even submitted it, they also got reassurance that okay, what we bought, what we are going to release in our own country be it...
