Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Mumbai)

I managed to stop by here on the way back from Crawford Market to Colaba. The building was quite large and very intricate. It was quite a nice building to look at. There is a lookout stage across the road, beside the BMC building. It has a really nice vantage of the terminus. The towers and the intricate designs all over the building was quite a sight to behold. I went in the morning so there was a bit of sun strike and was unable to completely enjoy the view on the stage. I ended up moving down the road to get a better view of the building. Be wary because it is a functioning train station and it was really busy with people going to different places. I had a nice vantage point from across the road but I think it would have been nice to get a closer view, but it was quite packed around the entranceway. This place is historical, on Indian railways, when it was built lots of information who when and how the place got built. The terminus is still functioning they have government offices. Architecture is european Indian and Moghul. If you like history you will enjoy the visit. I did hire a guide which is available when you purchase your entrance ticket Mumbai airport is really amazing. World Heritage partnerships for conservation Ensuring that World Heritage sites sustain their outstanding universal value is an increasingly challenging mission in today’s complex world, where sites are vulnerable to the effects of uncontrolled urban development, unsustainable tourism practices, neglect, natural calamities, pollution, political instability, and conflict. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus Station, in Mumbai, is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in India, blended with themes deriving from Indian traditional architecture. The building, designed by the British architect F. W. Stevens, became the symbol of Bombay as the ‘Gothic City’ and the major international mercantile port of India. The terminal was built over 10 years, starting in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay.
