The hospital was formally inaugurated by Prof. Madam J.Curie in January 2, 1950 and named after Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, as a tribute to and in the acknowledgement of the enormous donation of his land and property for the cause. Initially this was a Cancer -treatment Centre which gradually expanded its activities in basic and clinical -research with the assistance from government funding organizations. This eventually led to the founding of the Chittaranjan National cancer Centre (CNCRC), funded by the Government of India in 1957, which was committed to basic research on cancer. Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) is a cancer care hospital and one of the 25 Regional Cancer Centres in India. It was founded on January 2, 1950, as Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, named after Chittaranjan Das, who donated land and property for the cause. It is located in Kolkata near Jatin Das Park metro station and Hazra. Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI), Kolkata is an autonomous organization under the administrative control of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India that functions as a Regional Cancer Centre. Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute began its research efforts in 1957. At that time research activities at this institute had emphasized on the understanding of the biology of cancer particularly of the predominant types viz. oral cavity and uterine cervix.
