Karin Lange (Vorsitzende DCCh e.V.)

Meet the Bohemian Shepherd

Meet the Bohemian Shepherd, also known as the Czech Shepherd Dog, Chodenhund, or Chodsky pes. We’ve come across a bit of controversy regarding this breed. Some maintain that it’s nothing more than a strain of German Shepherd Dog that isn’t recognized by any major kennel club in the world (though the breed is recognized nationally in the Czech Republic). Note: Since this piece was written, the breed has been accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale). Other sources write that the Bohemian, or Czech Shepherd was probably one of the predecessors of the German Shepherd Dog since it was known to existed in the Czech Republic as far back as the 1300s. Still another source states that it’s not really a Czechoslovakian breed, but Czech in name only because the Czech and Slovak Republics didn’t merge until the early 20th century, and are separate again. We leave it to the experts to sort out. We’re just passing along the information. These are highly social dogs who love their people with breathtaking intensity, and lots of exercise. As a working breed, it does well in obedience, agility, and protection, but requires a gentle hand, as do most intelligent breeds. Chodský pes

Chodský pes (Irluka Krosandra) Základní informace Země původu Česko Tělesná charakteristika Hmotnost 16–25 kg Výška † psi: 52–56 cm feny: 48–52 cm Barva černá s pálením Klasifikace a standard Skupina plemena ovčácká, pastevecká a honácká multimediální obsah v kategorii na Commons † výška uváděna v V dubnu 2019 bylo plemeno prozatímně uznáno Celkový vzhled Chodský pes je středně velký ovčácký pes, má obdélníkový rámec a harmonickou stavbu těla.

Bohemian Shepherd

History The Bohemian shepherd is a The Bohemian shepherd would continue to be associated with the Chodové even after their agreement with the Kingdom of Bohemia was declared void in 1695. J.A. Gabriel, writing about the Chodové in 1864, described the local people as “Psohlavci” (Czech: Dog-heads) as their pennon featured the silhouette of a Bohemian sheepdog with a longer coat at the neck. Following the aftermath of World War II, the breed nearly disappeared. A small group of enthusiasts submitted a proposal in 1948 to get the Chod dog recognized by the FCI; however there were some disagreements on a breed standard and efforts were soon put aside. In 1984, International FCI judge Jan Findejs and cynology expert Dr. Vilém Kurz partnered to reestablish the Bohemian Shepherd. Advertisements were placed in local Czech newspapers searching for Bohemian shepherds with a handful of owners coming forward. Dogs were assessed and compared with preserved documentation, written materials and period drawings. The main goal was to raise healthy dogs with good temperaments. In 1985, the first litter was born to this program. Despite their appearances, there is no evidence to suggest they are related to Introduction to North America The club established standards with the objective of starting breeding programs in North America dedicated to best practices for healthy and diverse full bred gene pools. In 2019 an owner from the USA traveled with a female Bohemian Shepherd to the Czech Repub...

Breeding

Eyes open when buying a puppy! This also applies to our race the Chodsky pes. Unfortunately, there are already some breeders in Europe who breed either without pedigree papers or papers, but which are not recognized by FCI, or there are those who mate Chodsky pes with other breeds and sell them as Chodsky pes. Therefore, please inform yourself in detail about the origin and descent of your puppy, so you will not be disappointed later.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Text and photos by Yossi Guy While attending this year’s World Dog Show in the Czech Republic, I came across several native breeds that are unknown outside that country. Many Europeans know the Czech Terrier and the Czechoslovakian Wolf Dog, but few have heard of the Bohemian Shepherd (Chodsky Pes), Bohemian Spotted Dog, Prague Ratter, Czech Mountain Dog or Bohemian Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon. This article will focus on the first three mentioned above. The Chodsky Pes – Chod dog for short – looks a bit like a small version of a German Shepherd Dog. (GSD breeders, please excuse the comparison!) Its long black-and-tan coat is quite attractive, and the breed has a friendly, biddable character. The history of the Chod dog dates back to the 13th Century, when the Chod family was responsible for guarding the most important roads leading from Domažlice to Němec in the Bohemian Forest on the southern border with Germany. Needless to say, the dogs that always faithfully accompanied them had to be tough and highly resistant. As was usual at the time, these dogs not only helped guard and defend the former Bavarian-Czech border, but were also used for herding and had to be able to track game for hunters. Every Czech schoolboy knows the drawings of 19th-Century painter Mikoláš Alša, which complemented Alois Jirásek's historical 1884 novel "Psohlavci," set two centuries earlier. Especially well known is the drawing depicting Chod, who carefully observes his surroundings wearing a long...
