How it works • Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of infections. • Ciprofloxacin works by converting two bacterial enzymes, topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, into toxic enzymes that block the manufacture and repair of DNA and other DNA processes. • Ciprofloxacin belongs to a group of medicines known as fluoroquinolones (also called quinolones). 2. Upsides • Ciprofloxacin may be used to treat a wide range of infections such as those occurring in the urinary tract, prostate, respiratory tract, sinuses, bones and joints, abdomen, and genital area. However, it should only be used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, chronic bronchitis, and sinusitis when other treatments have failed or cannot be used. • May also be used for the treatment of plague or uncomplicated gonorrhea, in addition to other infections. • May be given as a preventive measure when people have been exposed to anthrax. • Effective against susceptible strains of several different gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, for example: Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-susceptible strains only), S. epidermidis (methicillin-susceptible isolates), S. pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ciprofloxacin (Oral Route) Proper Use

This medicine comes with a Medication Guide. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions. This medicine works best when there is a constant amount in the blood or urine. To help keep the amount constant, do not miss any doses. Also, it is best to take the doses at evenly spaced times, day and night. For example, if you are to take one dose a day, try to take it at the same time each day. If you need to take this medicine for anthrax infection, your doctor will want you to begin using it as soon as possible after you are exposed to anthrax. You may swallow the Cipro® tablet whole or break it in half at the score line. Do not crush or chew it. Tell your doctor if you have trouble swallowing the tablet. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole. Do not crush, split, or chew it. Shake the oral liquid for at least 15 seconds just before each use. The oral liquid has small microcapsules floating in it. These microcapsules may look like bubbles or small beads. Do not chew the microcapsules when you take the oral liquid. Measure the oral liquid with the marked measuring spoon that comes with the bottle. You may take this medicine with or without food. However, Proquin® XR tablets should be taken with a main meal, preferably the evening meal. Drink plenty of fluids while you are using this medicine. Ciprofloxacin + Metronidazole is a combination of two antibiotics: Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole. Ciprofloxacin works by preventing the bacterial cells from dividing and repairing, thereby killing the bacteria. Metronidazole kills parasites and anaerobic bacteria that cause infections by damaging their DNA. Together, they treat your infection effectively. • Your doctor has prescribed this combination medicine for the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery. • Diarrhea can cause dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids to help rehydrate you. • Consult your doctor if your diarrhea lasts for more than 48 hours. • Do not use Ciprofloxacin + Metronidazole if you have blood in your stool or if you are severely constipated. • It may cause dizziness and sleepiness. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how it affects you. • Avoid consuming alcohol when taking Ciprofloxacin + Metronidazole as it may irritate your stomach and also cause excessive drowsiness. • Notify your doctor if you feel pain in your tendons, numbness, or tingling sensations. • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive or breastfeeding.

Moderate ciprofloxacin metroNIDAZOLE Applies to: ciprofloxacin and metronidazole Using ciprofloxacin together with metroNIDAZOLE can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances (for example, magnesium or potassium loss due to severe or prolonged diarrhea or vomiting). Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations during treatment with these medications, whether together or alone.
