An international multi-sport event held quadrennially among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, the Commonwealth Games are sometimes referred to as the Friendly Games. Since 1930, the event has been held every four years, except in 1942 and 1946. This glorious festival of sport aims to unite the Commonwealth family through the core values of humanity, equality, and destiny. Athletes compete in the spirit of friendship and fair play in this event, known as the ‘Friendly Games.’ Commonwealth Countries An association of 56 former British colonies, the Commonwealth of Nations is simply known as the Commonwealth. In the Commonwealth, the Queen is the head of state. The member states have no legal obligations to one another. They are connected by their use of the English language and their shared history. A look at India's achievements down the years in table tennis at the Commonwealth Games

Down the years, India have been fairly successful in table tennis. In fact, the sport has been the sixth-most successful one for India at the quadrennial event, having won 20 medals throughout the competition. Looking at the dominance on the opening day for the Indian paddlers at Birmingham, it can be assumed that India might win a medal or two at the event this year in the sport. The first medals that India won in table tennis was at the 2000 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. In fact, it was in this edition that the sport was introduced into the Commonwealth Games. India won three bronze medals in Manchester. Chetan Baboor, became the first India table tennis player to win a CWG medal when he won the bronze in the men's singles category that year. Baboor then went on to win another medal in the men's doubles category with partner Subramaniam Raman. The Indian men's team also clinched the bronze medal at the event. Since the introduction of table tennis at the Commonwealth Games, the 2014 edition in Glasgow has by far been the least successful edition for the Indian table tennis contingent at the event. India won just one medal in table tennis, when the team of Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj won the silver in the men's doubles event. India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) has risen sharply over the last two decades. CWG 2010 in New Delhi was India’s most fruitful edition with a total haul of 101 medals while the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, saw India’s best-ever finish as a non-host nation. At Commonwealth Games 2018, India’s medal tally comprised 66 medals, including 26 golds, 20 silvers and 20 bronze. India ended third, behind Australia and England.. India’s haul at CWG 2018 was led by the shooting contingent, which racked up 16 medals. Shooting prodigy Manu Bhaker, aged 16, made a scintillating debut at the Commonwealth Games, breaking the Games record on her way to the women’s 10m air pistol gold. Another Indian shooter Anish Bhanwala became the youngest Indian gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games at 15 years of age. India have been fairly regular at the Commonwealth Games, featuring in all but four editions (1930, 1950, 1962 and 1986) of the quadrennial showpiece. Indian athletes debuted at the Commonwealth Games, then called the British Empire Games, back in 1934. The Indian contingent at London 1934 CWG featured six athletes, who competed in 10 track and field events and one wrestling event. India won one medal at their debut Commonwealth Games.
