Wednesday, June 14: Owing to the southwest monsoon’s delayed arrival over Kerala and sluggish progression over the Indian mainland since, parts of East and Central India have remained largely hot and dry during the first half of June. No major change is on the horizon this week either, with these regions expected to reel under the grip of heatwaves. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon’s eastern arm covered the entirety of Northeast India, Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and northeastern Bihar by Tuesday (June 13). But under the current meteorological conditions, it may take a while for the monsoon rains to enter the neighbouring parts of East India. Accordingly, isolated pockets across Gangetic West Bengal, southern Bihar, western and southern Jharkhand and northern Odisha will continue to endure heatwave conditions for the next five days — from Wednesday to Sunday, June 14-18. The IMD declares a heatwave in the plains when the local temperature is expected to cross 40°C and simultaneously rise 5-6°C above the region's average temperature. As for capital cities in the region, the maximum temperatures in Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Rachi will hover between 39-40°C this week. Patna, on the other hand, could see its mercury spike up to the range of 41-43°C. Considering these torrid conditions, Patna's district magistrate has restricted all academic activities up to Class 12 until June 18. Meanwhile, historical data suggests the southwest monsoon normally...
